Interview with Curt Scythe – Guitar- Cryophilic and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (https://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
CS: Hey my name is Curt, I’m the Guitarist for the Canadian Death Metal Band Cryophilic. As a band, I would describe Cryophilic as Old School Melodic Death Metal meets Modern Tec Death Metal.
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
CS: Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. My musical back ground, I started playing guitar at 12. Inspired by 90’s grunge, mainly Nirvana, then I discovered metal, like Metallica, Pantera and Slayer and it all just snowballed from there deeper and deeper into Death Metal.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
CS: What inspires me to make music, is every day life, anger, frustration or aggression. Playing extreme music like death metal, its like therapy. All the ugliness of life, can be released through the music. For Musical Influences, its a big orgy of bands, Suffocation, Nile, Obscura, Cannibal Corpse, Death, 90’s Grunge, 90’s Death and Black Metal.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
CS: My aspiration as a musician, to be a band that is precise, brutal and melodic, to move people and connect with people with our music, to help them get out their frustrations and anger and to have a good time doing it!
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
CS: So far, our proudest moment, is the release of the ‘Damned and Decayed’ album. We are very proud of our work on that album, but we are stoked on what we are working on for the next one too!
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
CS: We try to stay current and connected with our fans through social media, and online content, its the best way to reach people, other than playing live. We built a studio in our jam space so we can be self sufficient.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
CS: We have a few summer shows, August 19th we are playing Ryefield Studios Fest at the Whiskey pit in Brantford, Ontario. Its a weekend long open air metal fest, Byob, camping, food trucks, good times! Our good buddy Dee from Bangover Media is filming our performance and we are going to release a sweet video of it! He’s the same cat the did our music video for the ‘Witch Hunt’ Single off the ‘Barbarity’ album and the video for our new single ‘Majesty’ off the ‘Damned and Decayed’ album. August 26th, We hit Toronto, Ontario at The Hard Luck to Celebrate the release of ‘Damned and Decayed’ and Sept 9th we have our home town show, its all ages/licenced at Vertagogo in Hamilton, Ontario.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
CS: Personally I think downloading and streaming music is great to get the music out there world wide and accessible to every one and to share it, but we all know how that pays the, the artists make next to nothing. So I guess its both good and bad.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
CS: I don’t really have a song I wish I wrote, I generally write music that I’d like to hear.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
CS: One thing I dislike and am very against, is the greed of venues taking a cut of bands merch sales, that is absolute bullshit, merch and playing live, is where bands make their money. There is no real money in selling actual music these days.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
CS: Currently we are working on the follow up album to ‘Damned and Decayed’ and stoked about that, we have 8 songs written already.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
CS: Every thing, merch, music, videos and news can be found here : https://linktr.ee/cryophilicmetal
