Interview with Tom Riley (Guitar, Backing Vocals) of Capulus and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
Tom – We’re a 4 piece melodic hard rock band, with two guitars, bass and drums. Josh is the lead vocalist, but we all sing a bit of back up.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
Tom – Josh and I started writing music together back in 2013, my old family home was next door to the school, and we’d go and write during lunch breaks and free periods. We then had a year in Plymouth and formed a line up, we tracked some demos and played a number of shows around the area. The guys we were playing with moved on to various cities whilst Josh and I moved to Bournemouth. Here we met Giac and Alex, forming the band you see now. Giac and Alex were friends and bandmates back in Sardinia, so it’s a bit like a collision of two worlds!
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Tom – Our main influences in music come from bands like Alter Bridge, Avenged Sevenfold and Muse. A lot of the lyrics are inspired by the events that we see around us, sometimes written as stories.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
Tom – Our goal would be to tour around the world and play as many shows as physically possible. A true dream of ours would be to play a show at the Royal Albert Hall, backed by an orchestra.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
Tom – Josh and I tend to write the songs together, now that we have Alex on board we’re working with her in our new compositions. The songs only really take shape when everyone comes together.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
Tom – We tend to post them on our social medias, like Facebook and Instagram. Definitely check them out and come along to a show if you’re in the area!
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
Tom – I think it’s a great thing, so long as the artists receive a fair pay. Stealing music just robs the artist, meaning they can’t afford to record and produce new tracks.. some streaming platforms should also look at how much they’re paying the artists. They wouldn’t have any business if it wasn’t for the bands/musicians.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
Tom – I wish I had written Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles, that song never fails to get a smile. I don’t think I’ve met anyone that doesn’t like it.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
Tom – We’ve always loved it when bands interact with each other and stick around to watch eachother’s shows. Bands that play their show and then disappear don’t know what they’re missing!
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
Tom – Recording our new track ‘All That I Am’ with Leighton Allen, bassist of The Hoosiers. He’s awesome! I never would have thought we’d work with someone like that. They’re huge!
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
Tom – We are currently in the recording studio (HP Studios), recording a new EP. This will be released at some point early 2021. In the meantime we have just released ‘All That I Am’, which was also recorded at HP.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
Tom – Currently we have three singles out. These are ‘Apologies’, ‘Resist’ and ‘All That I Am’. These can be found on all streaming platforms!
