BLANKET HILL were founded in 2015 in Luxembourg. Creating an eclectic mix of modern hardcore, thrash metal, death metal and old-school heavy metal, the five members, Sven, Rick, Ornello, Miguel and David quickly garnered a reputation locally and internationally for their relentless live shows and the band was given the moniker of “Luxembourg’s Hardest” by the public. After the release of 2015’s “Kaizen” EP, which garnered many great reviews, the band toured Europe, pleasing audiences in countries such as Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, and the UK for the first time in 2016. In 2017, the band released a new EP entitled “Trenches Of Reality” with the help of British label Negative Reaction Records, to yet again rave reviews and toured Europe immediately after its release, gaining fans in places such as the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. 2019 was entirely dedicated to writing a new record, with the first single being rolled out in May 2020. Tours were planned, yet the Covid-19 pandemic cancelled all such endeavors, their full-length debut “The Courage of Hopelessness” was released in October 2022 via Nuclear Family Records and AAK Records and was accompanied by shows throughout Europe and the UK.In 2024, the band has successfully completed a first foray into Eastern Europe with notable shows in Romania and Bulgaria and released their anticipated second album« The Ash That Shall Remain » in September. Let’s take a look at their latest endeavor.
The first song gives the listener a good idea about the mood of the album, is entitled “Statement Of Intent”,a
Hard Core track, with menacing atmosphere and hard riffs at the guitar. “Eau Rouge” was released as a video single of the album, its a mixture of American Death Metal and Rap influenced lyrics, with melodic choruses and melodies from the Swedish Death Metal, its the best song of the album. “Charlatan” although it has heavy and harsh riffs, it’s accompanied by middle eastern melodies and nightmarish slow parts of vocals and bass. “Let The Hammer Swing” is a fast-paced song with aggressive riffs and suitable for live performances that can lead to the formation of lots of pits of death.” Out Of The Count” is the result of the combination of Hard Core and Thrash Metal, with short hard riffs and apocalyptic melodies. “Brass Verdict” with aggressive drum parts that impose a violent rhythm and post apocalyptic riffs at the guitars. “Halcyon Days” a melodic fast-paced song with uplifting melodies, raw aggressive riffs that will make the listener head bang relentlessly. “Loaded Dice” is a track that has lots of keyboards in the background and contains Hardcore, Death Metal, and Thrash Metal riffs. “The Ash That Shall Remain” is another one of the best songs of the album, it’s also fast-paced and has by far the most melodic riffs of the album in the choruses, with changes from brutal and clean vocals. The “Partisan” lowers the pase, is the most melodic song of the album, mid-tempo, that will blow the mid of the listeners. The last song of the album is entitled “The Dogs Of Venice”, a song that brings tears to the listener’s eyes, acoustic with smooth melodies that touches the soul, the ideal ending for such a great album.
“The Ashes That Shall Remain”, is one of the best albums of 2024, pleasant to the ear, aggressive, melodic with many influences from various metal genres and melodies that soften the mood of the songs, it’s not a coincidence that the public has granted them the moniker“Luxembourg’s Hardest”. It’s an album that you cannot miss.
