Age of Athena – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

AOA: Hey Pete! Thanks for taking the time to chat with me. Age of Athena is a symphonic metalcore band that likes to play loud and melodic heavy metal!

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

AOA: My name is Zachary and I play guitar and scream. I met our amazingly talented keyboardist Nathan in university. We started jamming and writing songs together, before meeting Helen and Michael a year later. We’re really excited to be releasing our very first album, Gate To Oblivion, on December 17th 2021!

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

AOA: Avenged Sevenfold is my favourite band of all time. M Shadows has a phenomenal voice, and guitarist Synyster Gates is a genius song writer – their songs are harmonically and melodically very rich, diverse, and his guitar playing is state of the art. They push me to write better music.

Shaun T is one of my favourite influencers of all time. He is a fitness professional famous for leading the home fitness program INSANITY. He is very inspirational, and he motivates me to work hard and push myself to places I need to go to achieve my goals and dreams.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

AOA: Musically, I think the dream is to one day reach a point where our audience is loud enough to be singing your lyrics back to us. That’s gotta be the most rewarding feeling – that’ll be the day where I’d say I really made it.

In life, my goal is to feel fulfilled and be happy. Simple. Day by day I get closer as I continue building relationships with new people who inspire me.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

AOA: The instrumentals are written by Nathan and me, and the lyrics are from Helen. We’ve collaborated and jammed with several other musicians in the early days, so we have a few credits to some other awesome musicians too. Our songs are about a metaphor of being in darkness, which can represent any number of topics like depression, alcoholism, or any lower state of being we may find ourselves in. Most of the time we are in this darkness without any means of finding a way out back to the light. The title of our album, ‘Gate To Oblivion’ refers to the point where we’re standing at the gates and we’re entering a world of which we probably won’t return from!

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

AOA: We use Facebook and Instagram to connect with our fans and spread the word with upcoming news. You can check us out at:

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

AOA: Being a younger person, I’ve totally embraced the technological age. I listen to music 100% exclusively through online streaming services. I’ve stopped buying CDs… I don’t even think I have a CD player anymore. That being said, it’s a poor business model as it is not in the best interest of the musical artists – as time goes on musicians make less and less money and that is a result of streaming services.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

AOA: Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s the greatest song of all time! Iconic melodies, epic instrumentals, and a track that truly was different and unique during its time!

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

AOA: People who speak louder than they should in certain settings. Tone it down, dude.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

AOA: Our song ‘Burn Down The Sun’ was left unfinished for a very long time. It started off strong, but we had no idea how to finish it properly. After a hard day’s work Nathan and I cracked the code and wrote the ending to the song. When we hit ‘play’ for the first time we just looked at each other, grinning from ear to ear. We knew we just finished writing the biggest and best song on the album.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

AOA: Right now, we are gearing up for Gate To Oblivion’s big release on December 17th. We have a music video filmed for our song Together We Fall that we can’t wait to show everyone! From there we are looking into 2022 and are eager to join the world in getting back to performing and attending live shows!

PD: What music do you have available online and where can we buy it from?
