PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
AOF: We are a death metal band called Abolishment of Flesh from Texas. Our music is aggressive, melodic and technical at times, but we like to have some groove in our music. A little bit of everything for everybody.
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
AOF: Abolishment of Flesh was formed in 2006 in a small town called Hereford, Texas by me, Ramon Cazares. I assembled some local musicians, and we took off doing shows right away. I went through a lot of line-up changes so the band now consists of myself, Ramon Cazares and Izaak Chavez as permanent members and the rest hired guns. Current live line up musicians are Jake Lahniers on bass and Adrian Galindo on drums.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
AOF: We are huge fans of music in general so we are open to anything that may inspire us. I feel personal life experience is the best inspiration for music. Just seeing life and the world play out in front us. And as far as our message, well, it’s very anti-human, we talk about the end times, war and death. A lot of personal and internal conflict. We have an album called the “Inhuman Condition” and I feel like that title and meaning reflects a lot of what our Lyrics are based off of.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
AOF: My favorite thing about being a musician is performing live. So, my goal is to perform old and new places and make new fans!
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
AOF: A moment that really stands out was when we played at the Hell and Heaven Fest in Mexico City 2016. We were booked in the same hotel with all the other bands on the fest. There was an after party and I remember sitting at this table at the hotel bar hanging out with Dino Cazares from Fear Factory, members from Sepultura, Suicide Silence, Suffocation, and tons more. We ran into Dave Lombardo, Amon Amarth, Ghost, it was definitely a great feeling being in that moment.
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
AOF: Well, funny thing is I feel like we fall into that category as well. We are definitely a DIY band and today that’s becoming the norm. I think it’s awesome that musicians are launching their projects from their own homes nowadays.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
AOF: We work with a few agencies, but we also book our own stuff. Even working with outside entities you still have to do a lot of the footwork when it comes to promoting. We plan to go back out on the road in the summer.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
AOF: Mixed feelings, I guess. I use Spotify all the time, I mean, who doesn’t nowadays. Sucks that artist don’t make much off it. Thankfully people purchase our music at our merch table when we’re out on the road.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
AOF: I know this may sound kind of cryptic or whatever but the song I always wish I’d had written is the song that hasn’t been or will ever be written, lol. Artists are always trying to create that masterpiece.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
AOF: You know, underground metal scene is alive and well but it’s still underground. And I can’t stand people, bands, musicians and promoters who rip off fans and artists. I don’t like bashing people publicly but these type of people should be exposed and kicked out of the scene.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
AOF: New music and working on putting together a tour for this summer.
