Yanomamo – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

Y: We’re a 4 piece, sludge-ridden-doom, riff machine!

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

Y: We formed in 2011 in Sydney Australia via a shared love of the riff & old horror movies. We were all playing in other bands at the time & viewed this as a side-project. It took off pretty quickly & almost 10 years later, we are still doing our thing!

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Y: Musical: Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Earth, Black Flag, Bongzilla, High on Fire.

Non-musical: Horror movies, misanthropy, Monty Python

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

Y: As a band, we just to keep doing this for as long as its fun & people continue to respond to it well. We’ve played shows all throughout Australia with loads of great local & international bands. In the future, we’d love the opportunity to play overseas … Europe, Japan, New Zealand etc … make us an offer, we’ll take it!

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

Y: Everything we do revolves around riffs. Whilst completed songs are often presented by either Jason, Paul or Jack, they are then refined in a band setting by jamming. In regards to subject matter, we tend to focus on the darker side of things. Misanthropy is a common theme.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

Y: Jason, our guitarist, owns a small label, Iommium Records. Most of our recent shows have been organised & promoted through this. Often times, we are asked to play gigs by other bands & promoters.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

Y: Big fan of digital downloads. Whilst we prefer the physical media, vinyl especially, we embrace all mediums.

PD: What’s your outlook on the record industry today?

Y: To be honest, our band isn’t concerned with the ‘record industry’ so to speak. Our music isn’t really suitable for mass consumption. The doom/sludge genre is quite niche, but the fans of it are extremely dedicated & we love that. Jason, (our guitarist) started Iommium Records after the nightmare of dealing with some small labels for our 2017 release, Neither Man Nor Beast. That whole process was not enjoyable at all, so we did it ourselves.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Y: So many spring to mind, but I’ll go with Emerald by Thin Lizzy

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

Y: Too numerous to mentions … but top 3 three would be intolerance, ignorance & the awful state of the world right now

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

Y: Really, it’s anytime someone appreciates what we do. After almost 10 years, I’m still totally blown away anytime someone buys our music &/or merch & comes to our shows. If I had to pick one moment, it would be touring Australia with Conan (UK) in 2014.

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

Y: Unknown at this point due to COVID19, however our shows are extremely loud, energetic & heavy! Playing live is our main reason for doing this band!
