Wizard Rifle – Interview
Interview with Max Dameran of Wizard Rifle and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
WR: Alien-human hybrids bent on creating some weird and heavy jams.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
WR: Sam and myself (Max) were both going to school in Portland, and were both trying to start a band, and we were both finding it hard to get people to commit and keep a practice schedule. We were introduced by our mutual friend, and we quickly started jamming together for hours a day, several days a week. Having just one person to coordinate with made it easy to stay on the same page and just spend a lot of time writing and developing our style. The name was something my roomate said while I was playing Super Mario World on SNES.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
WR: So many bands. We pull from everything we listen to, and never are like “okay for this track we’re only doing Sleep and E.Wizard”. We find tropey bands boring. Yes Black Sabbath are the greatest band to exist probably. No I don’t wanna hear your direct Iommi ripoff set.
Aside from music, we both love horror films, sci-fi, etc and we trade books.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
WR: To continue to do this band until we are decrepit. To tour overseas.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
WR: We both write the lyrics and sing. We never decided on what our lyrics or musical style would be, but there are themes that we gravitate towards… 1: Environmental destruction and the shortcomings of mankind 2: Personal struggles/existential shit 3: Sam writes fantasy and sci-fi prose kind of stuff
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
WR: Word of mouth, Facebook, Instagram mostly.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
WR: I take it you are referring to illegal downloading. Streaming services have kind of taken over so it’s not even as much of a contentious topic anymore. The industry is changing every second and everyone is trying to keep up.
PD: What’s your outlook on the record industry today?
WR: There’s a ton of smaller labels who are making it happen, and they all have different approaches. It seems like many of these labels are run mostly by one person who has a specific vision. There are also independent labels run by a group of people so the aesthetic of their catalog is more diverse. I don’t have any experience with major labels so I don’t know what to say about them, but all the independents I’ve had any contact with are run by really awesome people doing it because they love it.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
WR: “She thinks my tractor’s sexy” because then I would be rich. I could change my identity and have facial reconstructive surgery. Then I could make weird ass music forever and give it away for free.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
WR: When Sam is driving, if it rains even the tiniest amount he turns the wipers on. Then the rain stops and he forgets the wipers are on and they’re just scraping on the dry windshield and making screeching noises until I yell at him.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
WR: Opening for some of our favorite bands.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there
WR: In September and October we will be first getting deep into Canada which we’ve never done so you should come say hi if you live in these cities.
