Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: WHAT TYPE OF ARTIST ARE YOU
WFH: Psychedelic, acid rock, is the most likely category we’d be placed but there’s a certain cartoony element to it all. I wonder how far you’d have to go to earn the title of novelty act?
Outsider musician maybe?… Imagine the annual Christmas pub-crawl with Frank Zappa, Daniel Johnson, Brain Wilson, Syd Barrett and William Shatner. All sharing their therapist’s phone numbers while sipping an iced Baileys… sounds bloody fabulous.
PD: A BRIEF HISTORY OF YOURSELF
WFH: The journey started playing in lots of meat n potatoes indie bands via tribute acts (including playing Bjorn from ABBA). The recent destination was born out of taking the lead role of writing the songs and taking on front-man duties.
PD: WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES AND NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES
WFH: Musical influences are Ariel Pink, Robyn Hitchcock, Connan Mockasin, Ty Segal, Syd Barrett, Bowie, Flaming Lips. As for non-musical influences, I like most surreal art forms from The League Of Gentlemen, Terry Gilliam cartoons. Author-wise Charles Bukowski to Alan Bennet. Films ‘Withnail & I’, ‘The Greasy Strangler’. All highly recommended.
PD: WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND DREAMS
WFH: A sold out gig at the Brudenell Social Club (favourite venue in my home town of Leeds). Play the Park Stage at Glastonbury. Just to survive as a creative is the real dream.
PD: WHO WRITES THE SONGS AND WHAT ARE THEY ABOUT
WFH: I write the songs. The subject matters are all over the motorway. Sometimes they’re about people I know. They can be dark subjects disguised as whimsy. Often bizarre topics like cryogenically frozen heads. I like word play and stream-of-conscience lyrics. The lyric I’m currently working on is about Donald Campbell and Bluebird.
PD: HOW DO YOU PROMOTE THE BAND
WFH: Because gigging is out the window we are focusing on strong video content. Obviously trying to get as much press and radio play as poss.
PD: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT DOWNLOADING MUSIC ONLINE
WFH: Very bitter sweet isn’t it. Discovering a new artist is the upside but I do wish music hadn’t been devalued the way it has. I still try to buy vinyl/CD of new artists I like.
PD: WHAT SONG DO YOU WISH YOU’D WRITTEN AND WHY
WFH: Couldn’t possibly choose one so I wont. Lyrically, I wish I’d written Everybody Knows – Leonard Cohen, because it’s beautifully cynical and witty and Frankly Mr Shankly – The Smiths because it speaks to all that have to answer to the drowning of the factory whistle. Other songs include Race For The Prize – Flaming Lips, Born Under Punches – Talking Heads, Octopus – Syd Barrett, Lipstick – Ariel Pink, Tarred And Feathered – Cardiacs. Because they are all capable of arousing excitement and transporting you to a better place.
PD: WHAT ARE YOUR PET PEEVES
WFH: People that think Oasis are better than the Beatles. People that discourage others’ ideas and ambitions and cyclists that run red lights.
PD: WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MUSICAL MOMENT
WFH: Plucking up the courage to sing my own song in the studio, listening back and thinking it sounded super (it did have more slap than Barbra Cartland tbh)
PD: WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT
WFH: New songs and the next video
PD: WHAT MUSIC DO YOU HAVE ONLINE
WFH: We are at the very beginnings of the project so currently just one song that’s available to stream and the accompanying video on you know where. The next song is out soon and EP will be available in the spring
