Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (https://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
V: Viridis is a collective of musicians in constant hunt for the next greatest means of musical expression.
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
V: Our founding members began writing music in 2016, with the goal of inspiring others as our favorite bands have inspired us.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
V: Through our music, we strive to create for our audience a sort of escape, one which they can experience and interpret subjectively. Our songs are rife with fantastical imagery and thematic concepts that instill a sense of otherworldly belonging.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
V: Our aspirations are to expand our musical expertise and utilize it to share profound experiences with our audience.
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
V: Of the many achievements we had previously thought impossible, simply opening for some of our favorite bands has proved to be monumentally rewarding. Among those bands are Nashville’s hardcore behemoths Chamber, as well as Tyler’s infinitely heavy The Dialectic.
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
V: The subject of promotion has been an incredibly challenging ocean to navigate. Even without a focused emphasis on promotion, our first single performed well and taught us much. Our next release will be the product of our first foray into social media strategizing. Additionally, we have organized a merch giveaway for each of our releases, a recurring theme that will hopefully continue into the future!
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
V: We have a show planned for every week in August: On the 5th, we play in Fort Worth. On Aug 12th we’ll be in Tulsa, Oklahoma; on the 13th we’ll be in Fort Smith, Arkansas. On the 20th, we’re back in Dallas for a home show at Rubber Gloves in Denton, and then on the 29th, we play Haltom Theatre. We have been extremely lucky to be able to work with many talented promoters in the local scene, without whom we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are today.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
V: While physical media such as CDs and vinyls will always hold a special place in the heart of music, streaming is easily the most efficient way to expand your audience through the internet.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
V: It’s difficult to say that we wish we could have written someone else’s song. While, of course it would be incredible to share the songwriting ability that our favorite bands possess, the majesty of a good song stems entirely from the way it is performed and what it means to those who perform it. Our favorite songs wouldn’t be the same without our favorite musicians displaying their individualistic prowess.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
V: Today’s music industry is rife with predatory behavior, whether from musicians, audiences, or those who organize connections between the two. It is paramount that anyone navigating the music industry should stick to their values, and most importantly, focus on the music.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
V: At the moment, Viridis has found inspiration in working with our brilliant producer Chris Lane, of On the Rise Productions. We are hard at work bringing new and ever-heavier music to the people!
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
V: Direct messaging us through any social media is the best way to get in contact. You can find us on Facebook and Instagram. We would love to work out an arrangement with anyone who wants to represent our merch, regardless of proximity!
