Rock and roll how it should be made, without the fanfare – but perhaps a paisley shirt or two – Velcro Teddy Bears are Sam Chadwick (vocals), Mike Holland (drums), and brothers Mike Griffin (lead guitar), and Josh Griffin (bass guitar).
The ‘What Makes You Right?’ EP was released on DMF Digital on a limited edition release of 100 CDs. The lead single ‘That’s What Makes You Right’ is also digitally available. The track is about “ . . . looking into yourself and returning with the things that you stand by and make you, you,” says Chadwick.
The Sheffield band makes music evocative of ‘70s swamp rock, while their boyish locks and nonchalant presence resonates with the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel. From Credence Clearwater Revival to Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan to Black Sabbath, the band’s love of classic rock with a lot of heart and soul is apparent.
All gravelly vocals, melodic – yet punchy – guitar riffs, and fluid bass lines, Velcro Teddy Bears won the accolade of ‘Yorkshire Unplugged’ in 2012. The release of their debut EP ‘Coming Back For More’ in 2013 showcased the bands rural and country roots, however the addition of drums and electric guitars, on tracks such as ‘Summer Breeze’, has allowed them to explore the dimensions of their searing sound.
Crowned ‘Oxjam Battle of the Bands’ winners for 2014, the four-piece feel quite at home on stage, developing an aptitude for song writing and performance at weekly live music nights at the pub they run. Long-time friends with a gigging history that stands as a testament to their hardworking ethos, Velcro Teddy Bears’ fun nature translates in their songs and at their shows.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, The Velcro Teddy Bears are looking forward to continue releasing music and playing to as many people as possible.
