VANENO – Struggle Through Absurdity EP

VANENO – Struggle Through Absurdity EP

VANENO – EP “Struggle Through Absurdity” (27 November 2021, Raging Planet Records)

  1. Glorybringer
  2. Deceiver
  3. Ad Nauseum
  4. Nightrider

The Portuguese band Vaneno began their journey in heavy sound in Lisbon in 2017. They began very humble from the inner need of 3 friends to jam together just to express themselves, but soon the whole thing progressed and with the completion of the line-up it eventually advanced to something bigger. Struggle Through Absurdity is Vaneno’s debut release.

Vaneno’s music covers a big range of the heaviest and most extreme sound. The basis is their very strong sludge/doom influences. However, they also do incorporate Stoner/Heavy Rock and Death Metal elements. Their influences vary from Crowbar to Orange Goblin and then from Meshuggah, Pantera and Machine Head to St. Vitus.

Struggle Through Absurdity consists of 4 tracks. This is an asset here because it actually gives the release great strength and power which remains throughout the whole EP. This really makes Struggle Through Absurdity a dynamite release for all fans for heavy and brutal sound!

Taking a track by track listen, the EP sets off with Glorybringer. Its thick riff-work brings to mind a Hatebreed, Crowbar, Machine Head mix with great heaviness and brutality. The vocals are also close enough to Hatebreed’s powerful expressive ways. The drums of the songs (but also in the whole EP) are thunderous. At the grooviest parts the band is super dynamic and intense. Their slower parts appear to be super heavy like a crawling serpent!

The next song is Deceiver. This one is a darker track. The atmosphere of the song is more sinister and obscure. The track actually is 100% on the hardcore/sludge motive Vaneno have, but it shows a different side of their talent.

Ad Nauseam is a monolithic sludge/heavy metal song with groundshaking slow parts. Vaneno seem to intentionally add a huge variety in their music. They do it with honesty and this gains them diversity and a personal sound.

The closing track, Nightrider, is another Crowbar-worship, adrenaline-filled song. The mix of metal with punk is always extremely aggressive in both its hardcore and thrash versions. Vaneno have worked really well with their sound and mix these styles in an overdose of brutality. Nightrider is the first single out of the EP.

Struggle Through Absurdity was co-produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Pedro Mau (Kneel, Wells Valley) at SinWav Audio and it was released on 27th November 2020 via Raging Planet. In its around 20 minutes length, Vaneno make a statement on who they are as a band and of what they stand for. This is a Sludge/Doom, Hardcore, Stoner/Heavy Rock and Death Metal mixture with personal style.  Struggle Through Absurdity is a very enjoyable release for all fans of the aforementioned styles. It is also a very promising release, which on the one hand sets Vaneno in the scene-map, while on the other it sets the expectations for their next work at too high levels. Definitely a worth to check out and support release!
