Traced By Enemies Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?
TBE: We’re just four friends, playing some metal(-core) and having lots of fun.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
TBE: Formed in 2016 by connecting a part of a former band and Fabio, our lead guitarist, we put our focus on some decent shows (with acts like Trade Wind, Siberian Meatgrinder and lots of very cool local shows) and our first EP, Unity in Diversity, released in December 2016. That record sold out pretty fast and we got to work on our next EP even faster. After a little summer break our old bassist and drummer decided to leave the band, which took us a step back, but with finding Dan as our new drummer, things went on really quick again. And now were here, ready for releasing hell on stage with our upcoming EP (available 6th April) “Where The Sun Turns Grey”.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
TBE: There are many, but most influential for us are bands like Architects, Wage War, Bury Tomorrow, Stick To Your Guns and Parkway Drive, to keep it in the metalcore/hardcore way. There are bands like Depeche Mode, The Acacia Strain, Slipknot or the Beastie Boys we also enjoy a lot. I can say, that we got a very versatile taste of music. From ’90s pop music over rap and hip hop up to death and black metal – you name it, we’re listening to it!

PD: What are your dreams and goals?
TBE: Well, dreams are dreams… Of course it would be utmost amazing for us to headline festivals like With Full Force, Graspop, Download – yeah, even Wacken! Playing the Warped Tour, playing shows around the globe. Are our dreams our goals? Let’s say it this way. We’re realistic, but if we are fortunate enough to realize our dreams, it’d mean unbelievably much to us.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
TBE: I’m proud to say, that we still write our songs together as a band. That’s not an usual case anymore. Fabio and Lukas, our two guitarists record their parts and analyze the written structure with Dan and me (Dennis). Dan mostly corrects the given drum tracks so they fit him and us and I’m writing lyrics. These lyrics are adressed to all the things pissing me off. Personal issues, depression, broken hearts and so on, but they also consider political, social topics.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
TBE: Facebook, Instagram and actually talking with people.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
TBE: Uh, that’s a hard question. Everyone’s got their smartphone, Spotify installed and streaming all the music they want. I’d be a hypocrite if I’d say, that we don’t do that, too. It’s a nice feeling to have something physical of your favorite band or the band you just discovered on your latest club show. This also gives those bands, especially those smaller bands, so much – and I mean not just the money. As a result: BUY MORE MERCH! It’s not made to be sold for two or five bucks a year after!

PD: What’s your outlook on the record industry today?
TBE: It’s overcrowded, I can’t deny that. To emerge from that pool, you have to put out a really good record and have a bunch of luck as well. It’s a hard market, but you just gotta be lucky.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
TBE: I don’t know what’s with the other boys, but for me there are some great songs, I wish I’d written. Songs like “Enjoy The Silence” by Depeche Mode for its sheer beauty, “D(I AM)OND” by Stick To Your Guns for its powerful meaning or “Master of Puppets” of Metallica, because it’s “Master of Puppets”… And Metallica.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
TBE: Might be still standing crowds and technical problems, haha.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
TBE: So far, it’s our new record. That thing became a real banger for us. But you can add “sharing stage with Jesse Barnett and his guys in Trade Wind” to this list. Aaand – really important – our fans!

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
TBE: The next ones are in Krefeld (Magnapop, 07.04., with Valley, Born As Lions, Harmed, Returner, Slave New World & Heavy Kind) and in Mönchengladbach (Westend, 14.04., with Glass Heart, Insidious, Citizen Down, NV & Back To Atlantis). The show in Krefeld is our record release party and it will be the first time for us to stand on stage for like five or six months and our first time with Dan. The Mönchengladbach show is not less attractive and we’re about to celebrate into Lukas’ birthday! Just come and hang out with us!
