The Yalla Yallas – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

TYY: We’ve evolved out of the Punk Scene and now we’ll play anything that we can turn our hand to. Mainly Rock, Blues, Country, and Folk.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

TYY: We’re a four piece band from Leeds, UK and we started out in 2007. Myself (Rob) and Will are the original members. Vince and Grant joined over the last couple of albums but Grant has been producing us from the start. We’re about to release our fifth album. We’ve toured Europe a number of times and we’ve supported a lot of our heroes.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

TYY: My musical influences varies all the time there are no boundaries, some weeks I’m listening to The Stooges, other weeks Hank Williams, I’ve recently had a spell listening to Spiritualized and Spacemen 3.

I’m also influenced by poetry and philosophy. I love reading. Most recently I’ve been reading ‘The Descent of Man’ by Grayson Perry, Vicktor Frankl’s ‘Mans Search for Meaning’ and also ‘Sapiens’ by Yuval Noah Harari.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

TYY: Luckily I’ve achieved most of my biggest dreams and goals, releasing my music on vinyl record was a big one as I had dreamed about that since being a child, our last single ‘Morning Sun’ is also being sent to the moon on an actual rocket, and I had one of my favourite singers cover one of my songs during lockdown. I’m a lucky man who is always having to dream up new dreams.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

TYY: I write all the songs and they are inspired by all manner of things. Life, Politics, Love, Observations, Dreams, Nightmares. I love writing as it feels like I’m getting things out of my system.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

TYY: I think the best kind of promotion is being a great live band, and I’m really proud of our live gigs. It’s always a good night out. Otherwise we aim to keep releasing and recording quality music.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

TYY: I like it, I’m a lover of both vinyl and digital music. There’s room for both in the world and streaming/downloads have resulted in me spending a fortune on vinyl.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

TYY: I wish I’d written Search and Destroy by Iggy and the Stooges. It always makes me feel 100ft tall. I already feel like it’s my song.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

TYY: This weird nostalgia trip that everyone seems to be riding. Why can’t people just leave things alone. Albums being re-issued on different colour vinyl or remakes of movies. It’s been going on for far too long. Gaslight Anthem celebrated 10 years of ‘59 Sound’ … I love that album but it only came out the other year, and you’re all young enough to still be making new relevant albums. Are we going to get a 59 Sound reissue every 5 years from now until the end of time?

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

TYY: I tell you what blows me away. When after a gig and you see someone hovering and they’re waiting for everyone to go so they can talk privately and then they open up and tell you what’s going on in their lives and then they tell you how your lyrics have helped them or what they mean to them. It always touches me and I’ve even found new meaning in my own words.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

TYY: Well I’m just preparing to release the new album ‘What it Means to be Human’ which will be out on the summer solstice 21/06/21. It’s very different to anything we’ve ever released before. It’s much more reflective. The kind of album that you can listen to on your own. I’ve said that we won’t be playing this album live. This is the album you can buy at our hi-energy Rock n Roll gig to take home and chill with. I think it’ll sound ace about 3-4am.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

TYY: We’re on all the streaming sites but we’d prefer it if you head to our own website where you can purchase our cds/vinyl etc… and watch our videos etc…
