Even with a lack of live performances, 2021 has already proved to be one of the best years’ of The Rotanas time as a band. So far this year, they have released two singles – ‘Spinner’ and ‘Manic’ – which between them have clocked up over sixty thousand streams on Spotify, spot radio plays on Radio X, SiriusXM, and RTÉ 2FM, and repeat radio plays on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Introducing Hereford & Worcester and Amazing Radio.

‘Spinner’ also saw the band climb to the top of the Dutch indie chart compiled by IndieXL, pipping new releases from acts such as the Foo Fighters, Maximo Park, and Royal Blood to the top spot, and the success gained the attention of Disobedient Records, a new Liverpool based independent label with heaps of ambition that’s already proving to be one of the best on the block, who promptly signed the band up for their next few releases.

Initially forming in Cardiff in May 2017 – originally as a four-piece but now with a new line-up and fifth member – The Rotanas honed their craft in their formative years, playing shows up and down the country. The band embarked on their debut headline UK tour in November 2019 working with promotion company This Feeling who are renowned for breaking the best new guitar bands in the country. The act are set to team up once again with This Feeling later on in the year and have a seven-date autumn tour lined up.

Highlights of the band’s career so far include selling out Cardiff’s iconic Clwb Ifor Bach; sharing stages with Black Grape, Pete Doherty, and Kyle Falconer of The View; playing the 2019 Isle Of Wight Festival; performing at the 2019 Shimmer Sounds Festival in their hometown alongside Temples, The Blinders, Black Honey, and Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard; having their releases added to Spotify’s editorial Hot New Bands playlist, Radio X‘s evening playlist and BBC Radio Wales’ daytime Welsh A-list; and recording a live session and interview on BBC Radio Wales for legendary DJ Janice Long.

New single ‘Get The Call’ is infused with ’90s indie, psychedelic, and shoegaze elements, and it is the first of the band’s releases not to be written by prolific songwriter James Wilson, with new member Aaron Tormey taking the creative lead on the track.

Speaking of the inspiration behind the new single, songwriter Tormey commented: “Personally, I like to be quite ambiguous when speaking of the inspiration and meaning behind tracks as I like to let the listener interpret it how they see fit, and I think song meanings can be interchangeable from person to person. I will say that loosely, for me anyway, it’s about putting effort into something but questioning if it’s what you’re meant to be doing in life and whether it’s worth the struggle.”

‘Get The Call’ was recorded in Leeders Vale Studio, Ebbw Vale by Jon Constantine (Public Service Broadcasting, Tom Odell), mixed by Nick Brine (Oasis, The Stone Roses, The Verve) and mastered by Pete Maher (The Rolling Stones, U2).
