The Oceans – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

The Oceans: The types that write songs simply ‘cause we can’t help it. We love writing songs and love being in the studio just as much we love playing concerts – which of course we also really love. But that state of mind you’re in and the feeling you have, when you create music is just so addictive that we can’t live without it.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

The Oceans: Linus Valdemar and Dan Joe form the duo The Oceans. Met at a jam in 2014, ended at a morning party where we decided to form a band and not long after we started writing and recording songs. In 2018 and 2019 we released an EP dilogy which was well received and reviewed in our homeland as well as abroad. And on the 9th of September our debut album called ‘Love Above All’ will be released on Celebration Records.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

The Oceans: Musically we are much influenced by the british music scene from the 80’s and the 90’s with acts like The Smiths, The Cure, New Order, Pulp, Oasis and Blur on top of our list. But with the new record we’ve been listening to a lot of different stuff including genres that we haven’t explored before including hiphop and electronically pop.

Non-musically we’re influenced by the city pulse and the diversity of the people living among us, that being Copenhagen.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

The Oceans: Climbing the next steps up the latter. Tour in Germany, the whole of Scandinavia, then maybe UK. Try to get booked for bigger festivals and showcase festivals in Europe. We want it all and dare to dream, but some sub-goals along the way to the top is nice 😉

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

The Oceans: Both of us write songs. We don’t meet up every week to write together. It’s more like one of us sends over an idea or a Logic session file, then the other take over, edits or just comments on it, and that’s how it goes back and forth. And when we have a bunch of rough demos we meet up in Linus’ studio to finish them up.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

The Oceans: Internet, social media, poster, flyers, etc.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

The Oceans: Linus: “I miss the old days where you saved up to buy records in a store. That feeling walking into the store to buy the new album by your favourite band! I miss that. You don’t get the same thrill buying stuff online – and not only music actually.. With that being said I kinda like being able to hear new music whenever I want to. Discovering new artists has never been easier. I kinda like that… BUT I love my ever growing vinyl collection and nothing beats when the needle hits the record!

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

The Oceans: Heroes by Bowie. It just has it all hasn’t it? Great lyric, great melody. It just takes you to a better, higher place without trying to hard.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

The Oceans: Linus: “Might be very common but I can’t stand people making loud chewing sounds at dinner”.

Dan: “Cats”

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

The Oceans: Pretty early in the bands career we played a sold out show at a festival in Tivoli, Copenhagen. That was pretty wicked and I remember having the feeling that this could be big.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

The Oceans: We’re now ready with our debut album ‘Love Above All’ due the 9th of September on Celebration Records, so that’s what we’ve been working on for quite some time. Right now we’re rehearsing with the band getting ready to play some live shows when the album is out, and then again in Denmark (Copenhagen and Odense) in October and have a few dates in Germany in November to be announced.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

The Oceans: Our two EP’s are out everywhere for streaming and to buy online, and so will the album when it’s out of September. The two EP’s as well as the album is or will be available to purchase online (for an example at bandcamp) or in stores in Denmark.
