The Magic Bus – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

TMB: Hi Pete and thanks for having us! We are “The Magic Bus”, a four-piece band from Livadia city, Greece. We play Rock music with lyrics in our native language. We are: Valantis Dafkos (vocals & backing vocals), Ermis Soultanopoulos (guitar & backing vocals), Dina Argiriou (bass) and Paris Gatsios (drums).

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

TMB: It all started at 2017. At the time we were playing in different bands, but then, out of the blue, we played a free jam together in which we found out that we had such an awesome chemistry with each other and… voila, the Bus was ready to travel! We started as a cover band, played a lot of live shows and real soon the need to create something new emerged, so now we have recorded our debut album, titled “Το Κάστρο” (The Castle)!

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

TMB: There’s an inner need to create, to communicate through something that was born in your head and became whole in a recording! It’s… a magical thing, haha!!! As for the influences, god, there are so many! There’s the music we grew up with, the music we discovered, the music we love, the music we hate – every single song has had a tiny impact in our lives and sculpted our character musically. You’ll detect many influences from the ‘80s and ‘90s rock (and metal) scene, distilled through our personal prism and you’ll hear/read lyrics inspired by literature, personal quests, myths and innermost thoughts.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

TMB: We wish to see our music travel as far as we imagine and to play as many live shows as possible!

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

TMB: As a band, it obviously is the the composition and recordings of our own music, of our album! We’re just too excited about it!

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

TMB: Promoting your own creations has always been a challenge and, regardless the time/era, it all always comes down to a single thing: work hard, love what you do and you’ll get there! On our behalf, we always record in professional studios and do everything we can to ensure that the raw/physical sound of the recordings is all over our record, always pay attention to the details and keep our music character intact.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

TMB: We book and promote our live shows ourselves, just like our album, video clips etc. There’s an “oldschool” vibe when everything runs through you first… and last! Unfortunately, due to the corona virus restrictions, the lives are much fewer than we’d want. These are difficult times and, hopefully, we’ll get through it soon enough and return to everything we love!

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

TMB: For better or worse it’s the reality these last few years and we have no quarrels with it! The purpose is to spread the music worldwide, the medium is of minor importance. We believe that people will continue to buy cds and vinyls, just as they will continue to buy books in physical form as well as read them in e-book readers; it’s just a different mean to the same purpose!  Of course, as romantics ourselves, we’re going to print our LP on cd format, so everyone can enjoy the beautiful artwork along with the music!

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

TMB: There’s an iconic song from the greek rock band “Τρύπες” (The Holes), called “Ταξιδιάρα Ψυχή” (Globetrotter Soul) which refers to “The Magic Bus” and is one the reasons we named our band like this in the first place… well, it would have been awesome if we’d written it!

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

TMB: Just like any other industry, music industry has its ups and downs, its best and worst… One thing we would definitely change is the inequality in press promotion! As long as the press gives equal chances to every band, then the good ones will prevail no matter what!

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

TMB: We recently released a video clip and we’re working on a second one, as well as a lyric video for another of our album’s songs! Of course, our new album is what we will especially promote in the near future!

PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?

TMB: You’re welcome to find us on our Facebook page and YouTube channel while soon enough on Bandcamp, Soundcloud and almost every other music platform! Come say hi!!!
