The Last of the Fallen Angels – Interview
Interview with Conrad McQueen of The Last of the Fallen Angels and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
CMQ: I’m CMQ, a songwriter and collaborator. The Last of the Fallen Angels is my dark electronic pop collaboration project.
PD: How would you describe your music?
CMQ: It’s been described “as like Nellee Hooper, Bjork and Massive Attack had a beautiful baby” and “heavenly in the guise of a beautiful ghost”.
PD: Tell us about your first recording
CMQ: “Phase IV” is a collaboration with Mark D (Sapien Trace) and Victoria O ( AXLS). Producer Simon Ellis (Spice Girls, Kylie, S Club 7) got the vibe and was full of great production ideas.
After a chance meeting on Facebook, Mike Bennett (The Fall, Ian Brown, The Specials) saw my teaser video for the song and immediately wanted to release it on his Paraffin Alien label.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
CMQ: TLOTFA came about during lockdown this year. I was messing about with a piano, drum machine and echo. It got to the point where I needed a collaborator and more voices to add to mine. Mark D and Victoria O were only too keen to help. Turns out so many creative musicians were also stuck at home wanting to get creative, so the project was born.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
CMQ: I’ve always got ideas going around my head. Words and titles usually inspire me to create a piece of music and I go from there. Mostly the singers I work with write their own words and melodies. “Phase IV” is love song to electronic music. It was written by CMQ and Mark D.
PD: Tell us about the video for “Phase IV”
CMQ: Because of lockdown, I asked the other singers to record themselves performing the song on their mobile phones and send me the footage. I’d never made a video before and had to learn while doing it, but the DIY approach paid off and it was fun to do.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment? What’s next?
CMQ: I have just completed a song with Renée LoBlue (from the band Elk City in New Jersey) which is such a dreamy song. I can’t wait for people to hear it. There is another song with Mark D and a new one with Victoria which features DJ Rasp and a great drummer called Alex Wardle. Also there are some really exciting collaborations with Mike Bennett and some big names (although I can’t mention who just yet – you will just have to watch this space!)
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
CMQ: LCD Soundsystem, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Tricky, Bowie, The National – all find their way into music. I was blown away recently by “Dark” on Netflix. It’s a German series and it is mind blowing. It’s one of those shows that if you explain what it’s about, you will spoil it. All I would say is, just watch it. You won’t be disappointed.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
CMQ: This Mortal Coil’s version of Tim Buckley’s “Song to The Siren” just has to be the most beautiful song of all time. If I produce a song half as good as that, I’ll be very happy!
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
CMQ: Just to keep making music. Although, I’ve always wanted to perform on Later With Jools Holland!
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
CMQ: I loved hearing my song on the radio on BBC Music Introducing. Nick Roberts is so supportive of up and coming artists and it’s amazing to be played alongside such great new North East music.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
CMQ: “Phase IV” the debut single is available on 28th August on all digital platforms on Mike Bennett’s Paraffin Alien label.
