The Foxfires
The Foxfires formed in August of 2013 as a side project for guitarist Christian Cordero of the Nightingale Effect and former solo artist, Christian Diana. After a few brief trials, Jason Delima and Adam Kahn, former bassist for The Nightingale Effect were chosen. The band originally titled, Christian Diana and the Foxfires’ name came from the folklore term for bio-luminescence such as glowing mushrooms and fireflies.
The Foxfire’s sound was forged by the ethereal and sometimes dark nature of post-punk and shoegaze bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and Joy Division; the bouncy Indie Pop nature of bands such as The 1975, Two Door Cinema Club, and Foals; and the summery beachy, and experimental folk sounds of bands like Wilco, Milo Greene, and Mumford and Son. The sound became known as “Seagaze” which was inspired by the band’s collective love of the beach and the ocean. “Seagaze” is often described by the band as the sound you would want to feel while you’re looking out at the ocean and is also inspired by Bruce Lee’s speech about being like water- able to flow and open to change.
A campaign to both promote the band and its positive message was created called “Choose Love” encouraging people all over the world to accept peace and serenity and choose love over hatred which causes violence and keeps the world from achieving true peace. Love of the self. Love of your fellow man/woman. Love of the enviornment. Love of all races, creeds, religions, genders, sexualities, and backgrounds. Love for the world.
In November, 2013, the band under the moniker at the time, “Christian Diana and the Foxfires”recorded the “Common Culture/Patience” single in Stroudsburg, PA with Four Year Strong Producer Dan Malsch and was released that December.
Fall of 2013 into April of 2014 saw the band playing extensive shows across NJ, NY, NYC, PA, and CT along countless artists including as Rookie of the Year and Sparks the Rescue. In May of 2014, “Departure” (EP) was recorded in Stroudsburg, PA with Dan Malsch and was released that June. Summer 2014 into Fall of 2014 saw bigger and better shows for The Foxfires playing constantly amongst Pentimento, Have Mercy, Graves, and This Good Robot with former Patent Pending lead vocalist, Michael Ragosta.
In November of 2014, “Seasons” (EP) was recorded in Brooklyn, NY with Jon Altschuler, current producer for They Might Be Giants. January 2015 saw the departure of drummer Jason Delima and the signing of The Foxfires to former label Manic Kat Records based in NY. The band played several acoustic shows as well as road tested several drummers before deciding on Brandon Vallejo in April.
The newly revamped and revitalized band took to the road constantly playing all the old haunts and several new ones throughout the tri-area. In June, The Foxfires played the world renown venue, The Bitter End in Manhattan, NY and in that same month The Foxfires’ Manic Kat Records debut “Seasons” was released. Shows were a constant that summer with the band sharing the stage with Kurt Travis, formerly of Dance Gavin Dance and Alot Like Birds, and in August the band went on their first official tour, titled the “Straight Outta Nyack” tour (the title was based on the popularity of the filter released for the NWA inspired “Straight Outta Somewhere” movement for their film “Straight Outta Compton). The tour saw new horizons for The Foxfires in VA, NC, MD, RI, PA, NJ, and Upstate NY (the latter two being familiar venues).
The Foxfires continued to play continuously throughout the tri-state area through Fall of 2015 to Winter of 2016 with new and exciting shows at Garcia’s at The Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY and Madison Theater in Albany, NY opening up for Michale Graves, former Misfits lead vocalist.
The Foxfires emarked on their “Time Flies” tour across VA, DE, NY, PA, and NJ in March of 2016. On that same tour The Foxfires title track off of their latest EP, Seasons was being broadcast on 107.1 The Peak based out of Westchester county and White Plains, NY which reaches Rockland County, and North Jersey as well.
Soon after tour, the band began working with Grammy Award winning producer, Ted Young in Brooklyn, NY – responsible for records such as Blonde Redhead’s “23”, Hawthorne Heights’ “If Only You Were Lonely”, Sonic Youth’s “The Eternal”, Taking Back Sunday’s “Where You Want To Be”, and Kurt Vile’s “Smoke Ring for My Halo” and “Walkin on a Pretty Daze” as well as his Grammy Award winning historical album work with The Rolling Stones, “Charlie is My Darling.” to prepare for their upcoming debut full length album, which was to be called Reawakening.
During production the band played consistently throughout the tri-state area and have recently had their song, Fall Equinox, also off Seasons featured on WRRV 92.6 and 96.7 in Hudson Valley and Orange County, NY and have been featured on WLOY radio in Maryland and 99.3 WXRY in SC and Black Diamond Radio in Scotland as of May 2016. From late July of 2016 to the end of August 2016, the band embarked on their longest tour yet spanning most of the east coast and the midwest.
September 3, 2016 saw the release of The Foxfires first full length album, Reawakening, a bold new step forward for the band in terms of songwriting, musicianship, production, and artistic individuality.
Fall of 2016 has been consistently eventful with the band playing local festivals such as Groove on Grove in Jersey City, NJ, Haverstraw RiverArts & Music Festival in Haverstraw, NY, and Harvest Fest in Bloomfield, NJ put on by This Is It Productions. September 20th the band was played on Salford City Radio in the UK. With the TCS NYC Marathon, the 21st Millennium Music Conference, The Bowery Electric and Maxwell’s under their belt as of 2017, The Foxfires are looking to have a very productive year.
