Simply incredible, in a span of 12 songs The Damnation Project fuse in their sound the post, hard, alternative and even progressive rock, producing a stunning work. The time flows like water and, while the album is almost an hour long not even once did I checked the clock or wondered how much time had passed. Only when the “4” was done, I realized how much time had passed. The “4” is, without a doubt, one of the best rock records released so far in 2022.
The Damnation Project have a soft spot for the progressive and the classic rock sound and it is visible all throughout the album’s span. In the “4” there are a few post-rock ideas, particularly in the opening song of the album “Show Me”, creating a nostalgic, slightly sad yet beautiful atmosphere. The rock ‘n’ roll, blues/rock, ZZ-Top inspired ideas add, also, a nice contrast, offering a dose of excitement and energy in an album that has quite a lot of ballads.
Now, the ballads, you see, play an important part in the narrative of the album. Blues inspired, they are emotional, powerful and melodic and shape a big part of the overall aesthetic of the “4”. It is an album of contrasts and musical contradictions, full of sharp riffs and mellow, melodic ballads, a combination that keeps the listener hooked during the 60 minutes that the album lasts.
The Damnation Project, being the absolutely creative they are, incorporate the different sub-genres of rock into an entertaining, fun and musically amazing experience. Like I said before, the “4” has to be one of the best rock albums of 2022, a record that you must give a chance.
