Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
S: I would say we are an Alternative Metal band, but we have a wide variety of influences.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
S: The history of Suspyria started in 2018. Our vocalist Terence Stevens had recently disbanded his old project after being unable to play music for a period. This led to him seeking out something new. This is where he met Mitchell Black in the local music scene.
We instantly sparked, we had heaps of common interests in music and ideology. We both realised we had this drive and excitement within us, and both wanted to turn these ideas into reality. This was the point where we needed to recruit more members.
During our search for band members, we had already more than half written our debut release and we were in the process of looking for producers to actualise our ideas.
Eventually we linked up with drummer Beau Grech. And finally, we recruited our bass player Chris Viper.
During this time, we had already booked time in with a fantastic local producer Christopher Vernon who plays in Better Half and Belle Haven. He has worked with many bands in the local scene.
A couple years, a couple music videos, and an album release later brings us to the present day where we have now dropped our follow up release, The Damage.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
S: The combined music influences of the band include a wide variety of artists.
From: Avenged Sevenfold, My Chemical Romance, Architects, parkway drive, Deftones, Rise Against, Fallout Boy, A Perfect Circle, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Tool, Led Zeppelin. Many many more as well. Each of us have very wide tastes in music and love bands and artists across all genres. Some of our non-musical influences would be:
Mitchell: Sadik Hazovik, My mum, and Batman.
Terence: Tim Mcilrath, Keanu Reeves, my older brother Richard (he’s the reason I play in a band), my parents and my beautiful Partner Larisa.
Christian: Kurt Cobain, Lionel Messi, Slash
Beau: Lebron James, Taylor swift (she’s just inspirational) and George Clooney.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
S: We want to turn this band into a lifelong career, that’s the goal of most musicians I’d assume.
We want to take this as far as we can for as long as we can. Then we can look back in old age and feel extremely proud of all the hard work we put in the things we achieved. Life’s more about the journey than the end goal, right?
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
S: Most of our material is written by our Vocalist Terence Stevens. Either he or guitarist Mitchell Black, usually come up with an idea and workshop it, then bring it to the band and we collaborate on how to go forward with it.
Most of the songs are written about mental health topics and trauma, either things happening in our lives or things we have vicariously observed from the people around us. Addiction and relapse have themes that tie in. Our most recent song The Damage is about toxic relationships and the loss of love.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
S: Our band is based in Melbourne, Australia. So currently we are unable to play any shows as no venues are open on account of the government regulations and lockdowns. All our promotion is done through our social media accounts on Facebook/Instagram ETC. You can find us under SUSPYRIA OFFICIAL.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
S: We support it, the upside of streaming services is the access to so much music. It’s awesome that it can give underground artists a platform to launch themselves into the ever-evolving music industry. The downside is obviously most streaming services drip feed a very minuscule amount of revenue for those same artists; you can’t make a living from it.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
S: Terence: it’s a tough choice because there are so many talented songwriters. It’s a throw down between; Demigod by Architects or Alkaline by Sleep Token. such underrated tracks. Something about the musical note choice seem so ingenious to me. I absolutely love those songs.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
S: People that chew with their mouth’s open, or people that don’t clean up after themselves. Absolutely abhor that.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
S: Hitting 250,000 streams on our first single Old Habits Die Hard would be the one.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
S: We are currently working on a follow up to our first record “Regression”. The new music is more refined, mature and hits extremely hard.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
S: We have all our released music available on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Google Music, YouTube, and virtually every other streaming platform.
