Brilliant Things (Digital)

Subterranean Lovers are releasing Brilliant Things, the first single of their upcoming album with the same name, on the 1st of April via Futura Futura Records.

Brilliant Things is a song that describes the desire for a nearly unrealistic version of a poetic, romantic love story. It expresses (sometimes in a tongue and cheek way) wishes of living a life of high romance, extreme feelings, servitude and martyrdom for love and is influenced by the great artists, sculptors, poets, writers, love stories, and martyrs throughout history. It started out being written in the shower and was written with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan’s voice in mind, thus the original title “Martyr”.

The band Subterranean Lovers is releasing their second album on Futura Futura Records over the course of 2022, with the first single Brilliant Things coming out on April 1st. The band will be touring Canada and Europe this spring and summer with M!R!M! from London and Patriarchy from LA.

Subterranean Lovers is led by songwriter Nikki Nevver whose roots lie in the bedroom pop and retro-inspired synth-pop music of Terror Bird and the gothic punk sound of Modern Creatures, which she was the key songwriter and singer in. The full band, based in Vancouver, BC in Canada, creates dramatic soundscapes using heartfelt vocals and acoustic guitar, sax ranging from upbeat to erie, minimal drums, emotive violin, haunting cello, uplifting bass, and two electric guitars playing off each other. The new album is Nikki’s most interesting and original album yet, using classic songwriting whilst pulling influences from a wide variety of sources including 60s pop, garage, spaghetti western, 90s brit pop, American indie, experimental music, NYC art rock, 70s glam, 60s folk, and even free jazz and Americana.

The album was mixed, played on and co-produced at a recording studio on a Canadian island in the woods by Jordan Koop, a protege of Steve Albini and mastered by Jason Corbett of the band Actors. Toronto band Odonis Odonis have created an alternative version of Brilliant Things which will be released later this year, along with remixes with musicians from Canada, the USA and Europe
