The American band Slow Burning Car comes straight from L.A. with a great mix of Grunge Rock with Alternative Rock and additional Metal elements. Nevertheless, the core of the band’s sound is heavy rock as played from bands like Husked Du, L7, Nirvana and Sonic Youth.

Slow Burning Car has been active in the scene for over 15 years and they have already released 5 full length albums with the latter being “Projection”, the album we review today.

Slow Burning Car makes decent use of hard rocking / heavy guitars with catchy riffs and power chords that immediately stick to your brain. The rhythm section is rocking steady. They use double – both male and female – vocal lines, which mix well and match together just fine.

The album’s production is 90’s but with a very fresh view. On “Projection” you will also find many tasty and technical lead guitar parts which work really well with the band’s songwriting.

The opening track “Public Cynic” dwells somewhere between L7, Elastica and The Breeders! There are many really interesting references and everything is worked to fit the band’s personal style.

The next song entitled “Lad-ish Man” has a “B-52’s meets The Presidents of the USA for a jam at Iggy Pop’s studio with Alice Cooper and Led Zeppelin secretly smiling” attitude, which justifies it being a single out of the album. The way Slow Burning Car progress the riffs in the same track, and the way they mix them with the vocal lines is really impressive. The song’s lead guitar brought to mind memories of early Screaming Trees on SST Records!!

Slow Burning Car managed to record for “Projection” 10 really effective rocking songs with many remarkable moments based on fantastic ideas, a great number of potential hits, and although some songs are radio friendly, Slow Burning Car manage to remain an underground band.

90’s indie, grunge and alternative rock fans must surely check out Slow Burning Car and “Projection” is a nice start! There is definitely something great happening here! Check it out and dive into their back catalogue!
