Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (https://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
SH: It’s Ben here! I am Shallow Honey’s guitarist. We would describe ourselves as female fronted 90’s alt rock loud, heavy, catchy melodies.
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
SH: Although I’ve never been able to read music, I’ve always been able to pick out songs ‘by ear’ whether it was playing on a crappy yamaha keyboard when I was 8, or a guitar, it progressed to writing my own music and several bands and many years later, we are here.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
SH: We get inspiration from everything around us, from friends, family, feelings, what’s going on in the world, other songs and musicians, or even our pets!
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
SH: To continue to produce music that we’re proud of and share with as many people as we can along the way.
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
SH: Our first single ‘Control’ was picked up straight away by Melitta Dennett from BBC Introducing (south) which gave us a huge boost.
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
SH: We try to utilise all means of promotion that we have at our disposal, from social media platforms, to simply chatting with other bands and networking.
Word of mouth is a powerful tool and just getting out there and playing locally has helped to get our music recognised.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
SH: We have a few ‘go to’ promoters that we liaise with as well as contacting new names to add to our list.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
SH: I think it is great for discovering new music, but the artists are definitely not receiving enough payment for downloads/ streams which is a real shame.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
‘Lullaby’ by the cure
SH: It has so many amazing parts layered over each other without sounding crowded, each individual part sounds amazing on their own but together it creates a massive soundscape that never gets old to me.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
SH: I think the music industry needs a huge shake up at the moment as since covid, it is becoming increasingly harder for bands to tour and make any real money from it unless you’re at ‘stadium’ level
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
SH: We are excited about our single, ‘Lightweight’ released on the 26th May, a few London dates, some local shows, recording our first E.P in summer and we’re playing LOUD WOMEN fest 2023 on the 16th of September!!
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
