SCHULTZ – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

Franz: We are SCHULTZ an industrial metal band from France.

Guitarfox : With a little touch of Voodoo Witchcraft… Yeah !

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

Franz: SCHULTZ is a solo project born in 2002 in South of France. It became a duo with the female performer VDREY during several years and a real band since 2018 with the arrival of Guitarfox (Guitar and vocals) and Sandy Dynamite (Live dance performance and vocals).

Guitarfox : Franz asked us to join him as a backing band for one gig at the Industrial Music Fest in Cannes (French Riviera) in 2017. It was meant to be a one shot, but it went well… So Sandy and I are still in the project today…

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Franz:I think lot of things from French music to industrial music. When I was young my parents listened lot of music at home and in the car. So I have always listened to lot of music. Now I have my own taste but I think all this kind of music have an influence on the music I make today. Even if my parents don’t listen to metal or industrial music 😉

Guitarfox : My parents used to listen things of their age : Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple… So as a teenager, I rebelled with more heavy stuffs : Punk rock, heavy, thrash, black and death metal… Classic story ! Now as an adult I am more open-minded, I can listen to Jazz, classic, electronic, in fact, everything that opens the doors of cosmic mysteries in me, whatever the style…

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

Franz: To live one day with our music … We work hard for it so maybe one day …

Guitarfox : Getting rid of that f***ing virus, so we could play live again !

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

Franz : It depends, for the Black Magic Party album, Guitarfox and I did all the music, Sandy and Guitarfox wrote all the lyrics except for Black Out and Devil Inside Me written by me. For the guests, like Hikiko Mori on this album, or K.B in Shot Of Pain, we always give total freedom for the lyrics without limits. They always do what they want and each time we are very pleasantly surprised by final result.

Guitarfox : I wrote the song Rats In The Sewers during the great conflagration of the Rainforest in august 2019. At this time I really thought humanity was over, and from then, we would be all just like super-rats fighting each other for their lives. The satanic theme went after that, Not because we believe in Satan – We don’t ! – but more as a symbol of effective anarchy, not as an utopia. You have to live regretless and repentless if you want to survive in this sick sad world. You have to get rid of that sick thing Nietzsche called the Moraline : all these things society builts around you to keep looking at you and your acts to judge you and make you live in permanent guilt…

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

Franz : Actually we made lot of interview and contact everybody we can to present the band everywhere. It s a long and intensive work but without work, no results. No Pain, No Gain ! About shows, due to that f***ing Covid, all of our concerts were cancelled unfortunately this year, but we work for better times, maybe next year…

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

Franz : It depend if it is legal download or illegal. I think legal download is the future for sure, less people buy CDs. Illegal download kills the industry, unfortunately, but there are to much bands who offer their music for free to try to be discovered, but I don’t think this is the good method. Because lots of people thinks now music needs to be free, but making an album is a long work, you need money and time for it…

Guitarfox : I don’t disagree with free downloading, only if the artist and the record company has already earned millions… LOL

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Franz : Too much song, I can’t chose.

Guitarfox : Every bawdy songs of the French repertory, because we enjoy them very much in my family !

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

Franz : My laptop refusing to start the day of a concert, or forgetting batteries for wireless mics at home 😉

Guitarfox : Being on stage unintentionally bottomless, because I forgot my pants backstage, with all the crowd laughing at me… Classical nightmare ! LOL. More seriously, just playing with a bad soundcheck.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

Franz : When I’m on stage with a great audience. You don’t need to have thousand of people in front of you to have a good time and to be proud. Sometimes little audience is better than big audience.

Guitarfox : When the concert is good, with good sound and good audience, enjoying the magic…

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

Franz : We just released our new album Black Magic Party the 01 May, and our new video a few days before. Actually we are promoting all this stuffs and trying to book gigs for next year.

Guitarfox : if next year there will be, of course. Times are uncertain…

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

Franz : Shot Of Pain and our new album Black Magic Party are now available everywhere on all digital stores. But the best way to follow us, is to visit our page schultzmusic.fr and our facebook page !

Guitarfox : Check it out, it worth it !
