Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (https://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
OOD: We are a symphonic metalcore band! We like to work with lots of heavy riffs, melodic choruses and a healthy serving of synths and orchestral elements!
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
OOD: We originally formed in 2015 and released two EPs ‘Fleshbank’ and ‘Utopia’. In 2018 we went into a bit of a hiatus as most members left to pursue life ambitions but reformed in 2019 with the lineup we have today. We spent a lot of time getting to know each other musically and writing during the pandemic which has led to our latest release, ‘The Worst Of Me’.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
OOD: We’re inspired by so many different types of music. George has a lot of influence from the rap scene and metal bands like The Word Alive. Kieran is heavily inspired by super heavy bands like Dealer and Alpha Wolf. Haydn is inspired by alternative metal bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Issues and Dayseeker. Oli is inspired by more progressive bands like TesseracT and Heart Of A Coward. Ant is inspired by bands such as Finch, Thy Art Is Murder. I think the huge diversity in our inspirations creates the interesting blend we have in our music today!
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
OOD: I think any band would be lying if they said their dream wasn’t to tour the world playing their own music! In terms of short term goals though, we would love to play at Download Festival in the near future, that will be the true “We’ve made it” moment for us.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
OOD: For the most recent release, most of the music was written collaboratively between George, Haydn and Kieran. George’s lyrics are centred around his emotions and past experiences which we really hope speaks out to the people who listen to us.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
OOD: Social media is where the most eyes are right now, so running ad campaigns on places like Facebook and Instagram is going to be our focus for promotion. We are working closely with Garry from SaNPR (A legend by the way) for this release though.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
OOD: It’s a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing in the way it makes music so easily accessible for everyone at such a low cost, but it also means the market is so saturated it makes it incredibly hard to get noticed. It also means artists aren’t getting paid very much for their music, but the visibility and discoverability is a worthy trade-off for artists our size.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
OOD: All-Star by Smash Mouth, oh to have a massively popular meme song would be amazing!
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
OOD: When people assume screaming in music doesn’t require any talent!
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
OOD: Haydn – My proudest moment in music is getting to the finals of Live and Unsigned in my teenage band. A bunch of 16-year-old lads playing metalcore at the IndigO2 was to a sold-out crowd was an incredible experience!
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
OOD: We’re working massively on pushing out our new EP ‘The Worst Of Me’ at the moment and getting our brand new set and stage show ready! Not to mention the odd bits of writing for whatever comes next in the background 😉
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
OOD: You can find us pretty much everywhere! Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, the lot. You will find our whole discography including our two latest singles: ‘The Void In Me’ and ‘Wonderland’ from our latest EP ‘The Worst Of Me’! We hope you enjoy it and get to see you at a show real soon!
