1 What type of artist are you?~
Mass Rejection are predominantly a hard rock band dabbling in industrial sounds.
2 Tell us the brief history of yourself.~
We started as two dudes with a guitar and synth and eventually turned it into a fully fledged band. Highlights include opening for Queensland Industrial band Darkc3ll, performing live on TV and working with US comic book artist Ken Haeser on band art.
3 Who are your musical and non-musical influences?~
We have several of those! Musically we’re influenced by bands like Marilyn Manson, White Zombie, Murderdolls, Metallica, Faith No More, Alice Cooper, NIN, Prince and many, many others.
Non-musical influences include Masters of the Universe, Marvel comics from the 80’s and 90’s, TMNT (pre-Bay), Evil Dead 2, Resident Evil 4 and a whole heap of other fun stuff.
4 What are your dreams and goals?~
To have at least one awesome full-length album and a handful of kick ass film clips! Oh, a library of CD and vinyl releases would be amazing too!
5 Who writes your songs, what are they about?~
I write the lyrics, but the whole band writes the music. The content is pretty straight forward most of the time. ‘Fake’ is about fake idiots who try to be something they’re not. ‘Predator Priest’ is about pedophile priests. ‘BAM! BAM!’ is about shooting god in the face.
We’ll always have physical releases of our music because I don’t think they’re ‘real’ if they’re just floating around online.
6 How do you promote your band and shows?~
Mainly through social media, but we’re kicking around the idea of using carrier pigeons.
7 What do you think about downloading music online?~
Some of the other members don’t mind it, but personally, I don’t like it. I like the feeling of having something tangible in your hands. We’ll always have physical releases of our music because I don’t think they’re ‘real’ if they’re just floating around online.
8 What’s your outlook on the record industry today?~
Grim. Like many other acts in the industry, I’d love to be able to do this for a living, but I don’t think it’s possible. I think those days are long gone.
The next show is ‘Whole Lotta Heavy Fest’! You should go because there’s gonna be a shitload of awesome bands
9 What’s your claim to fame?~
We receive regular airplay on radio show ‘Whole Lotta Heavy’ hosted by Mick Kee of Vendetta! Our soon to be released film clip for single ‘FAKE’ (directed by Elle Bates) will soon be on heavy rotation everywhere!
10 What are some of your pet peeves?~
Fake people. Religious nutters. Triple J.
11 What are the biggest obstacles for artists?~
A general lack of interest from the public in paying for music or watching local bands play. If you’re not Pink, Beyonce or Guy Sebastian, it’s hard to get anyone to give a crap in Australia.
12 Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.~
The next show is ‘Whole Lotta Heavy Fest’! You should go because there’s gonna be a shitload of awesome bands and Mick Kee from Vendetta is filling in on guitar for Mass Rejection! It’s gonna be awesome!
