Interview with Virginia Lillye, lead vocalist for Lillye and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD. What type of artist are you?
VL. A passionate one who loves to express myself through hard rock music, art and cooking.
PD. Tell us the brief history of yourself.
VL. Since my early childhood, I was schooled in singing, dance, and theatre. In my early twenties, I travelled to Europe where I was lucky to land major roles in hugely popular musicals; Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Grease, and Fame.
During my ten years in the theatre circuit, I spent my spare time tapping into being a rock vocalist. I perfected my craft while fronting numerous bands at corporate events for Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz and Christian Dior all over the world. The experience was enlightening and paid extremely well, however it was a chance encounter back home in Sydney that would lead to the formation of the award winning Australian hard rock band, Lillye.
PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
VL. Musically we all have a diverse range of influences ranging from Led Zeppelin, Skunk Anansie, Tool, Mastodon, Ani Di Franco and Heart. Other influences range from every day loves like food, art, culture, family and friends, to photography, sport and universal beliefs.
PD. What are your dreams and goals?
VL. To continue to make music and being successful with that by touring, recording and being true to ourselves.
PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?
VL. It’s a group effort with all of us throwing into the mix. Lyrically I write all the tunes. Subject matters range from emotions attached to relationships, be that mine or others, to current issues in the world to life experiences. I find that there is a story in everyone you meet or everything you witness and experience.
PD. How do you promote your band and shows?
VL. On our website, on social media platforms, posters and the old fashioned way.. word of mouth.
PD. What do you think about downloading music online?
VL. It’s an evil necessity lol… but also a great tool as you can reach a broader market that you could never have achieved before.
PD. What song do you wish you’d written and why?
VL. Happy Birthday. I’d be one very rich woman…lol!
PD. What are some of your pet peeves?
VL. Laziness, self-absorbed people, wasting time and bad smells.
PD. What is your proudest moment in music?
VL. I guess every day is a proud day as I am following my heart and being true to myself. Being a musician is sometimes a hard slog, but it gives me pride to know that I have the opportunity to continue making music that connects people together and that alone makes me happy.
PD. So what are you working on at the moment?
VL. As we have just released our debut album, we have been busy with shows, videos, interviews and working hard at getting the album recognized. We are also writing new material as we always like to keep the wheels turning.
PD. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
VL. We are excited about a show we have coming up on the weekend supporting Canadian band, Theory of a Deadman. We have Psycho Circus, Amped Festival and Wallapolooza Festivals here in Australia coming up which should be awesome. And we have a few more shows for the album release which we are pumped about as well. Watch this space for more announcements.
