Keep Up – 2nd Interview

Keep Up – 2nd Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

(Chris) We are a 3 piece original band. I’d say the best way to describe us is around the same concept as Blink-182. We record, we tour, and have a lot of fun doing it. T

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

(DJ) The band is located in Syracuse, NY. We release our first full length album in September of 2019 and are already working on new music for our fans. We have been a band since mid 2017 and have been actively progressing since.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

(Ian) Musical – Memphis May Fire, Our Last Night, Falling In Reverse

Non-musical – The Rock, Jackie Chan, Chris Angel

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

(Chris) My Dream would be to play Wembley Stadium since I grew up watching amazing acts play there. Now my goal is always to release music so I’m constantly in our studio writing and recording.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

(DJ) As a group, we are constantly collaborating and merging ideas for the writing process of our music. Most of these songs are written with a vocal melody and lyrical concept before developing into full songs. Sometimes we will write a guitar riff first before writing lyrics, but we find that hashing out a song melody works best. I typically write the lyrics for the songs, but there’s often times lots of input from Chris and Ian. Most of our songs are written from real life situations; growing older, relationships, deaths, or just having a good time.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

(DJ) Promoting shows has always been difficult, but lately we’ve been getting a decent amount of radio play and have started targeting fans through social media. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are big platforms that allow us to reach the people who want to attend our shows. Paying for radio ads has been a big part of the success in growing our attendance, but it’s expensive.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

(Ian) – Purchasing music online and streaming is cool. (Online platforms are fantastic for exposure) But as far as illegally downloading music, that’s not cool. Digital downloads have been a blessing and a curse these last few years. Selling physical copies of our music is the best way to make a profit, however, the digital market is vastly bigger and easier for our fans to stay connected. The downfall is that we only get a small percentage of online sales. But overall, we are thankful for the digital market and always finding new ways to use it to our advantage.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

(Chris) Either Imagine by John Lennon or Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Both are masterpieces and the orchestrations carry the song to that “god rock” tier.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

(Ian) – When people interrupt me while I’m talking, when people my age or younger call me “Bub, bud, buddy, pal, etc…”

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

(DJ) I could probably speak for the whole band when saying this.. Our album release show was such an amazing show, we had a packed venue and gave away tons of free discs to everyone who showed up to the show. We played about 2 hours of music and had a flawless show. This past year really surfaced the potential that Keep Up has and this next year is going to be even better.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

(Chris) We are working on our next chapter for the band. Taking a step back since the release of “Up In Flames” put the idea of releases in perspective. Since our world is run by social media, visual and short term are the only way to grasp people. We’ve decided to release singles with videos so our music is accompanied by a visual stimulation.

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

(DJ) Our next show is March 12th in our home town of Syracuse at Funk n Waffles. Why should you be there? Well, Keep Up puts on such a great show plus there’s gonna be Waffles. Yum.
