Kavorka – Interview
Interview with Haukur Már Guðmundsson, lead vocalist and lyricist of Kavorka and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
HMG: I am a musician; a singer and a lyricist.
PD. Tell us the brief history of yourself.
HMG: I was born in Reykjavík, Iceland in 1985. Music has been my life since I can remember. I have wanted to be a musician and perform in a band since I was like 7 years old. I´m almost 35 now, I´m still doing it and I´m still loving it.
PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
HMG: I would say my biggest musical influences are Metallica, Pantera, Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Every Time I Die, Down, Hank Williams, Neil Young, Converge, etc. You get the idea. Non-musical? Shit man, I´ve never even thought about it. I´m just gonna say the Icelandic winter. I mean, it´s very dark and cold, kind of like our music.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
HMG: My dreams and goals for my band are pretty much the same; get a record deal, get our music out there, tour and play as many places as possible for as many people as possible.
PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?
HMG: Our guitarist Sæþór usually brings the riffs. Then our drummer Haukur and bassist Arnar bring their stuff into it. Then when the song is ready I add the vocals to it and write the lyrics. The lyrics on our album “Internal Rituals” are about my personal experience with mental illness and substance abuse. So that´s what the songs are mostly about. Gotta write what you know.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
HMG: Usually on social media, mainly Facebook and Instagram. Isn´t everything done on those fucking apps these days?
PD. What do you think about downloading music online?
HMG: I have no problem with it. It´s great for unknown bands. If the people go buy their records afterwards, that is if they like what they´re hearing. You gotta support the artists, man. We are usually paying everything we do from our own pockets, so if you like our music, your support would mean a lot.
PD. What’s your outlook on the record industry today?
HMG: I think it sucks that some people are not willing to pay for records anymore, and those same people are usually the ones complaining about overprized concert tickets. Since when are musicians obliged to give all their hard work away for free? Makes no sense to me whatsoever.
PD. What song do you wish you’d written and why?
HMG: Oh jeez, there are so many songs popping up in my head right now. I´m just gonna go with “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath because that riff is just fucking amazing. Super catchy yet super heavy. Iommi is God!
PD. What are some of your pet peeves?
HMG: Closed minded people, elitists, racists, homophobes, sexists… fuck ´em all.
PD. What is your proudest moment in music?
HMG: With Kavorka, so far, I´m proudest of our record. I´m especially proud of how me managed to combine all these different genres we love and still make the record sound focused and not all over the place.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there
HMG: We are playing two local shows this month (March) with a few other great Icelandic bands. You should be there because we give it all we got, and we want you to be a part of our ride.
