Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
IL: I’m the type of artist that will spend weeks on a song getting it just perfect for me and then spend release week hating everything I have ever made and picking on every little detail, I would say I’m an anxiety driven perfectionist.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
IL: I was born in Sheffield and spent my childhood there. My dad wasn’t around, Mom had a long line of violent boyfriends so I saw a lot of things that I probably shouldn’t have at that age. Which I think helped shape me as an artist, at age 11 I moved out to Southern Spain with my family. My Grandparents had a shed in the garden with my moms old drum kit inside, so I started to pick up the sticks and banged away to Metallica for sometimes up to 5-6 hours a day. At the age of 22 I was picked up as a drummer by Geoff Tate (Previously of Queensryche) and toured the world with him, which was an amazing experience, but by that time I had my little boy and a little girl on the way, so I knew I needed to start building something for them which brought me to start my new project Ivory Lake.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
IL: I have too many to fit on a page but I guess my main ones at the moment are
Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys
Father John Misty
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
IL: I just want people to relate to my music and make them feel something real and if I can relate to people whilst playing Wembley stadium, then that’s a bonus
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
IL: I write all of my own songs, I’m quite strict about that as I feel more comfortable creating alone. The topic of my work can range from domestic violence and drug abuse, to soppy songs about my kids and partner, there is no box to stay in.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
IL: It’s mainly online now as I’m sure your aware but I’m not above handing out leaflets on the street
or kidnapping an audience to bring to my shows.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
IL: I’m conflicted about this one. As a musician I see how it has affected us in a big way. Being able to live off your royalties nowadays is practically impossible. However, I also believe that art should be affordable for the kid who waits weeks saving up their pocket money.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
IL: Gotta be life on Mars by David Bowie
What a song!!!
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
IL: I get peeved a lot these days but I must say
Auto tune and terrible electric drum kits are pretty high up on the list.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
IL: Playing the Whiskey A Go Go in California with Geoff Tate (previously of Queensryche) with Dave Mustaine (of Metallica and Megadeath)
in the audience-that was surreal for me.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
IL: Im working on an album at the moment getting the songs ready to take in to the studio -hopefully later this year all being well.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
IL: My debut EP by Ivory Lake will be available on all platforms 22/1/2021
