Insanity61 – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

I61: We are a Metal band, have our roots (musically and sence-wise) in Hardcore and deliver a unique mix of the two styles, with some punky singalongs on top. Our live shows are very energetic and we mostly pride ourselves with the amazing atmosphere that our fans create together with us.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

I61: We are five best friends, started making music together early on and never stopped. Over the years, our passion for Hardcore and Metal evolved to our very own style.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

I61: We’re inspired by fighters. Women, oppressed people, minorities and the supposedly weak who fight for justice. This is what drives us and our messages. Musically, our influences reach from Old School Hiphop to modern Metalcore and everything in between.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

I61: We want to have fun on stage and with our audience. And if possible, we’d like to inspire people to raise their voices for a better society.

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

I61: Being able to tour abroad and have people from far away – sometimes different continents(!) – sing along to our songs during live shows. This has happened so many times that I wouldn’t want to single out one event, but everytime this happens, it makes us super proud and happy.

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

I61: Difficult, to be honest. We’re trying out a lot of things to be heard by a bigger audience, but as you said, it’s really hard. We reach a good number of people through social media and the Spotify, but it’s definitely hard to break through, which we haven’t really managed so far. However, this is not the most important aspect for us. If someday we’re able to reach a significantly larger number of people, that would be great, but it’s not our ultimate goal, it’s not why we make music.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

I61: We are a DIY band, so we book and promote almost everything by ourselves. When we go abroad, however, we usually get help from local promoters who know the scene. Over

the years, we have got to know many great people around the globe and the network grows everytime we go out to play shows. Our last big tour was in Mexico, now we’re playing shows in Switzerland and other European countries, but we’re already planning our next bigger tour.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

I61: This is great. Many people can listen to our music and we get to listen to many great bands from all over the world. There’s this aspect of not making a lot of many, but this is not our goal anyway. Superstars are not as likely as they used to be, which I think is nice, because it opens up the scene for a more diverse artistic field.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

I61: White Christmas. Because it would mean that me and my friends would never have to work again and we could fully concentrate on making music.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

I61: There is still too much money being made from superstars. That’s why many in the industry hold on to these artists and keep them alive as long as possible, instead of helping young artists to get a bigger audience and more recognition.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

I61: As always, we’re working on new songs. Furthermore we’re preparing for upcoming shows and planning shows for next year.

PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?

I61: If you head over to insanity61.com you can find all links to our music, our merch store, social media pages and contact info.
