HYDROGYN – Interview

Interview with Jeff Westlake founder of HYDROGYN and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

Jeff: we are a hard rock band that touches the edges of metal just slightly.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

Jeff: we formed in 2004. After doing some touring and getting then vocalist Julie vocally up to speed in the rock world we went and recorded our first album with the legendary Michael Wagner. From that point and with endorsements from Pepsi, Budweiser and some other places the bank kind of took off. We found ourselves in Europe touring and then back to the states touring so that was a cycle for quite a few years. In 2015 Julie left and in came Erica on vocals for one album. Then some unfortunate things happened with Erica personally that again put the band on hold for a little while. Then in the fall of 2019 I approached Holly who is the now vocalist and the last vocalist in the band to be the front person for the band and she agreed. So here we sit now with a new album coming out October 30 and a bunch of other plans just waiting to see what happens out in the world.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Jeff: musical influences range anywhere from Johnny Cash to Ronnie James Dio and ton of other people in between. I would have to say one of my biggest influences is Dave Meniketti from Y&T.  I don’t know about any non-musical influences there’s a lot of people personally in my life they have been an influence but nobody really on the big scale of things.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

Jeff: my dreams are to just keep playing music and touching more people with my music and my goal in life is just to do it successfully and supply some thing for people to be able to escape into especially now during the current climate of the world as crazy as it is.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

Jeff: I do the majority right now of the music in our songs and have been the main writer in the band since it’s inception. Holly does all the lyrics and melodies and the rest of the guys as time goes on I am sure it’s going to be more involved in what we’re doing there all brilliant they’re all very talented and I’m sure that as time goes on their contributions in the collaborative since there is going to be bigger .

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

Jeff: we have industry professionals handle that for us. Of course we as the band do some too but it’s a bit of a machine overall.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

Jeff: I’m not a fan. I think music should be taken off the internet. Too many people working too hard to write music for it to be available for free. Of course I’m talking about pirating here. Overall tho even the legal sites I do not like .

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Jeff: too many to honestly get into that. That could be a lengthy list.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

Jeff: being on time is a big one. Knowing your parts and your role and executing properly. Respect to everyone even if you don’t think it’s necessary.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

Jeff: wow, charting billboard multiple times, touring the world and recording with Michael Wagener are among the top things.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

Jeff: shooting videos for the new Hydrogyn album. Working on some solo stuff as time permits and also the next Hydrogyn album.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

Jeff: I have music available everywhere you can buy music in the world. The band is Hydrogyn and also you can find my solo stuff under my name Jeff Westlake .
