Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
HP: Holding Poison are a hard rock band. Playing melodic, dynamic, commercialised rock music with thunderous guitar tones thrown in!
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
HP: Although we’ve known each other for years, Lockdown 2020 was the kickstart the project needed and the opportunity to finally work on a music project together. Matt found himself thinking of the most productive way to utilise the downtime and decided to bring some of the demos he’d been working on to life. With Jack’s help, this became a reality pretty quickly with the EP taking shape within a matter of a few months.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
HP: Musical influences come from a wide variety of bands, old and new. We are big believers that you have the potential to be influenced or find influence from any different type of music
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
HP: Not to be working a 9-5…. in all seriousness though from a musical perspective, having people enjoy your songs is always the goal. The main focus is for us is to enjoy it and be proud of what we’ve done/wrote
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
HP: Writing usually starts with Matt, he will throw demos together and then once they are in a good/audible place he will send them over to Jack to throw ideas at the wall. Then the scrutinising begins!
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
HP: It’s no secret that bands heavily rely on social media these days. That’s the main place we look to update our fans. It’s a quick and easy way to keep them in the loop and once lockdown ends it’ll be where we promote shows too!
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
HP: Streaming sites, as much as they don’t really pay bands they do allow up and coming bands a bigger opportunity to reach out and be heard. Like a lot of people, if you find a song you like you’ll tell a friend or keep playing it, and it allows you to share/promote all kinds of music.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
HP: Matt: That’s a very hard question to answer – I’d probably say ‘All My Life by Foo Fighters’ as after i saw that song played on Kerrang! one morning, I sat there and thought – I need to buy a guitar.
Jack: Would have to be Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix. Has to be one of the greatest bits of guitar work ever written.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
HP: Matt: The fact music gear is so expensive
Jack: Probably one a lot of guitarists can relate to, but I can buy 50 plectrums and within a week they’ll all have disappeared into the ether
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
HP: Matt: I think having the opportunity to work with a 3x Grammy winner in Marc Urselli on our up and coming debut EP.
Jack: Proudest moment in music is a bit of a weird one. I opened for S Club 7 and Blazin’ Squad in front of 10,000 people once
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
HP: Our debut EP is out on the 24.03.21 and we have something in the works that’ll be out at end of April/May time!
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
HP: You can find our 2 singles on all major streaming services (Apple, Spotify, Amazon etc) and our EP will also be available on all the streaming sites mentioned too!
