Heroes Don’t Ask Why Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (https://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
We are a melodic rock metal band from Finland. General and leader of the band, bass player Johnny Kivioja, defined our music from early on as divorce rock.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
Heroes Don’t Ask Why started in the summer of 2015. But our original drummer Pooki left the band and we started basically from the beginning at the April of 2016 when Kimmo Puhakka joined the group. Nowadays Pooki makes our music videos through his Torspo Films company. We’ve just released our first music video of the song ‘Seen it All’: https://youtu.be/5KBfaBx5zjw
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences
We have a diverse list of bands everyone’s been listening to. In Flames, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my valentine, Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, finnish bands like Hurriganes and Popeda. They all blend somehow in our music. For non-musical influences a famous finnish comedy show Kummeli has been part of our history.
PD: What are your dreams and goals
Our dream is to play at big festivals and have number one hit on mainstream radio. Of course a European tour would also be a big dream come through.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
Jussi Pajunpää (voc, gtr) and Matias Kaunisvesi (gtr, bgv) mainly compose riffs, Jussi makes vocal lines and lyrics. He gets little help from Johnny with occasional lines of lyrics or thoughts. However, arrangements are made at our HQ, together and we always record high quality demos there and evaluate song arrangements through listening them over and over. As our musical style divorce rock implies, there are some bad relationships processed through our songs, also religion gets few punches along the way. Early on we had some army-theme lyrics on our first EP.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows
We do the usual stuff: social media, posters, newspapers etc. Our drummer Kimmo is great at finding new outlets where to contact with our music all over the world. He’s our tour manager and works day and night with HDAW band stuff at computer. We are planning to buy him a new computer chair as a Christmas present.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
As long as downloading is made from artist approved sources (iTunes etc), it’s great.
PD: What’s your outlook on the record industry today
They are playing it safe nowadays. Only big acts are getting signed basically. I’m glad that internet has made it so easy for bands to promote their music without big record labels. If it’s good, it gets heard.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
Despacito. You cannot get a bigger hit than that.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
Our bass player still watches every episode of the Bold and the Beautiful.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
I believe it was the first time I heard my song from radio. It felt unreal.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there?
Well we have been playing our first shows here around Finland. We have a show coming up with finnish bands Waltari and Kilpi at Vaasa 2.12.2017. It’s our biggest live event so far. You should be here of course because the beautiful finnish nature. =) And of course for the great rock ‘n’ roll show!
