PERTH 3-PIECE PROGRESSIVE PUNKERS HELIGAN TO RELEASE DEBUT SINGLE, ‘CASTAWAYS’.

Heligan are a 3-piece progressive punk band from Perth, Western Australia. Their debut single, Castaways, will be independently released on July 16th, and was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Tone City Recording Studio by Sam Ford (Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Birds of Tokyo, Pond).

When life as he knew it was put on hold in early 2020, songwriter/guitarist Miles Green locked himself in his home studio, channelling his energies to create the music he wanted to hear but no one seemed to be producing. Throwing all his influences into the melting-pot, the genesis of Heligan began to be formed. Once Josh Young (bass) and Sean McMurdo (drums) jumped on board and added their flavoursome spice to the mix, the band was born.

Miles explained: “Castaways is a comment on corruption and abuse of power in today’s society”. The song features searing guitars, catchy choruses, and surprising changes of gear.

Castaways will be available on all major streaming platforms and can be pre-saved on Spotify at the following link: https://show.co/JlJ13h5

A launch party will be held in Perth at Convenients, Northbridge on the release evening, featuring an explosive line-up including legendary Perth rockers Ragdoll, and up and coming artists Rinrin and Scatterback.

Heligan describe themselves as ‘progressive punk’ as their sound brings together elements of punk, progressive, rock and metal influences.

Heligan is named after ‘The Lost Gardens of Heligan’ in Cornwall, England, a place where Miles has strong childhood memories of wonder, mystery, and intrigue – feelings that he hopes are replicated in the band’s music.

The name Heligan represents the bands ideals about the preservation of the environment and appreciation of nature.

BAND MEMBERS

Heligan are:

Miles Green, Guitar/Vocals (20): Miles is an English-Australian musician and has been playing guitar since moving to Australia at the age of 6. Miles is a career musician and studies contemporary music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). He is influenced by Metallica, Green Day, Propagandhi, The Living End, Karnivool and Royal Blood, to name but a few. His guitar playing is rhythmically tight a la James Hetfield with technical yet melodic influences such as Marty Friedman and John Petrucci. Vocally he is inspired by the likes of Green Day with catchy top-line melodies whilst lyrically providing sharp observational commentary of the world around him.

Josh Young, Bass (20): Originally hailing from Portland, Oregon, Josh started playing bass at 14 and shortly after formed his first original band. His playing is shaped by Grunge and Classic Western which he puts to good effect in creating the lower substructure of Heligan. He cites Primus, Rush, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Ween amongst his many influences. Like Miles, Josh studies contemporary music at WAAPA.

Sean McMurdo, Drums (22): Sean has been playing drums since the age of 9, playing in rock and jazz bands throughout his formative years. He is most influenced by melodic punk bands of the 90’s such as NOFX, Lagwagon and Strung Out and takes inspiration from drummers like Derrick Plourde, Dave Grohl and John Bonham. His style is a mix of fast punchy beats with precise fills and quick single-pedal foot work. Sean’s fast playing and passionate drumming maximises the energy of Heligan.
