Fox Violet – Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http:// petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
FV: I’m a singer songwriter in a project called Fox Violet. The style of music I write often starts as folk and then transforms into indie.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
FV: I grew up in London, and spending a lot of time in Scotland as a child, and moved to the states some years ago. I started songwriting about ten years ago after using it as a form of therapy it just grew into a great passion. Most of my songs start in isolation on just one instrument, usually a guitar.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
FV: Musical everything from Radiohead, Portishead, to PJ Harvey and Phillip Glass. Non musical influences I would have to say a lot of films. I am a very visual thinker. Films that made an impact on me include pretty much anything by Terence Malik so Tree of Life for sure. I am very influenced also by my dreams and trying to understand and interpret them.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
FV: I would love to score movies and write for other artists, as well as continue to share music with people all over the world.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
FV: I write a lot. In the project Fox Violet we just started writing together so that’s a collaborative enterprise. I really try to lean on this dream like world I want to convey to people, that’s neither real or fantasy to give people a release, so the songs are often intertwined with an abstract ‘feeling’ which also conveying a somewhat real story that actually happened.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
FV: A lot of social media 🙂
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
FV: I think it’s great to be able to get songs instantly. When I was a kid I couldn’t afford to buy a lot of music and things have become a lot more accessible. On the other hand the simple joy of going in to a record shop and buying something has gone and that’s sad.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
FV: Anything by Radiohead. I just love the way they combine sound and story in a way that captivates you and tales your breath away. It’s so powerful and cathartic but also beautiful and delicate.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
FV: Hahah. I guess waiting around. I need to learn to be more patient.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
FV: I would say last year one of my songs played on the radio in both Australia and the US and that felt like a dream come true.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
FV: I am writing a bunch of new songs for both Fox Violet and other projects, and I am working on trying to write for other artists.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
FV: Our next Fox Violet show is Jan 30th at The Hi hat in LA. Its a night of all female fronted musicians part of Fierce Femme Sounds, which is an organization I run with my friend (Meghan Jones). We couldn’t be more excited, the line up of bands is amazing, it’s free and it’s supporting women in music.
