Dlacho – Interview

Interview with Ivan Dlačić (Dlacho) and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

ID: Dlacho is one man band where I make songs in my home studio with all instruments and electronics played by me, lyrics and vocals made by me (vocals for a few songs were sung by one female vocalist) and all mixing, mastering and production is made by me. Music videos, logos and album arts were also made by me.  Dlacho’s sound is a mixture of metal, rock and electronic music.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

ID: I am 26 years old man from Croatia. I am the youngest of four children in my familly (I have 2 sisters and 1 brother) who are much older than me 10, 12 and 13 years older. They all at that time listened to rock so I immediately fell in love with rock. When I was very young age my brother started to teach me guitar so I learned to play very well at a very young age and started to learn rock songs that my brother listened to. Then in my elementary school I joined my brother’s band. After that in my teenege years I found some friends who listened to heavy metal music so I formed 2 different bands with them. At that time I listened to the heaviest of the heaviest metal. My dream from begining was to have a band that will perform on the biggest concerts in the world and have many tours… But after high school we all moved to different cities to go on faculties so we all fell apart and I never again found people to play with, so my dream was broken. But I never wanted to give up on my dream so I started to learn how to produce my own songs, but I didn’t have any equipment, so I started to work student jobs just to buy some equipment to make music, so I bought guitars, electric drums, midi keyboards, audio interface, microphone, studio speakers, etc. and I devoted a lot of time to learning how to mix, master, and produce music in general. And that is how I started making music all by myself because I don’t have others to play with, even do I would really like to have a full band.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

ID: I really like to play in front of many people on stage and that really inspires me for making music, but I don’t have a full band so it is not possible for now. That doesn’t stop me from making music because I hope one day I will find someone that will have same or similar dream so we can play together on the biggest shows. Also if someone already popular would need a band member I can just send my songs to them and said that I can be a perfect match for them because in my songs I did whole proces from songwriting, playing instruments, recording, producing, etc. all by myself, not just saying something like “hey I am expert in playing guitar” but expert in every musical proces, expecially now when you need to do whole music business by yourself and making videos, logos, album arts and everything more or less releated to the music not just making music. I really like to write about existence, how are we all here, how universe is big, about God, when I don’t have any inspiration I find something in bible and that make me think about war between heaven and hell (that type of lyrics are very good for metal music because it is something abstract and texts from bible are very heavy but also hard to understand so you can always understand it in your own way and from the same sentences you can make many different songs). But I also like to write about partying, about how this generation now is the happiest generation in the pictures but saddest in real life, about how we as humans destroyed everything so we need new world to start all over again, about how machines (robots) can take over the world if we don’t do something and so on…

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

ID: As an artist, as much as I can, I strive to make this world a better place. I strive to brighten someone’s day with my music. I try to make the messages of my songs always positive, precisely to brighten someone’s day or to show that not everything is so dark, even though this world is a very difficult place to live in.

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

ID: The proudest moment in my music career is when i completely independently wrote, recorded and produced my first song, made a video, logo and album art for it.

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

ID: As I am myself a bedroom artist it is very hard to promote by yourself because it is a complitely different from making music. You need to be a business expert. So I always thought that maybe it would be much easier if I was an pop artist but then i realized that there are also many pop artists that you need to compite with and that niche music is actually a better start because of a lower competition but also very high audience. When I decided to promote my own music I was searching a lot through the internet to promotion services and all of them are very expensive especially since I’m alone in this, and only gives you some amount of automatic or targeted streams and nothing more. Fortunately, because I primarily play metal I found the site Cutting Edge Metal which is completely different from the others because instead of giving me paid streams, it gives me the opportunity to meet different people, to be in different webzines, sites, to be on different radios, to be interviewed as you are interviewing me now, to be found by record labels and much much more. And right now it is going so well and I am so happy with the results even do I just started to work with them.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

ID: The biggest problem is that for now I don’t have any live shows and tours mainly because I don’t have a full band to play with, also I am relatively new in this and this is also my side project because, for now I don’t earn enough money so I have other full time job… But I hope It will soon change so music will be my full time job and I hope in the future I will have many many shows, tours, etc.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

ID: It is very hard for new musicians to start earn money from music when they aren’t popular so I think downloading music is only good if it is paid ofcourse… but that can also be very expensive for consumer. On the other hand streaming sites like spotify are I think very cheap for consumers but artists needs to have so many streams to earn reasonable amount of money. That especially hurt new musicians like me who just can’t get enough streams to make reasonable amount of money from streaming services. So I think for new musicians it is better to buy albums and for popular musicians are streaming sites maybe better because of continuous flow of money. For now, I think, we don’t have anything in the middle.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

ID: Oh, that is very very hard question for me because even do I mainly play rock and metal, I actually listens to all kinds of music, not just rock, and metal, but I love electronic music, pop music… so I wished I have writen many songs from diffirent artists, but I think band Queen is the King so, first one that comes to my mind is “We Are The Champions” from Queen because it is very special song that no one can replicate.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

ID: Yes, ofcourse, I don’t like that it is actually everything about money and nothing about music and thats why I really like niche music because every pop song has the same formula. The problem is that niche music don’t earn that much money and they aren’t so popular so in my Country i can’t go to their concerts because they don’t perform here because the aren’t popular enough.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

ID: I have a lot of new songs to work on so that is my priority, Also I found that If I do a cover song that helps promoting me because it reaches to more people. Also to promote my social media and my guitar playing, I am making short videos of guitar solos for pop songs that I upload to YouTube Shorts, Instagram reels, Facebook, and TikTok. I am aslo working on promotion and also learning a lot about music business. Also I am learning how to make lyrics videos to push my songs a little bit better…
