Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD. What type of artist are you?
We’re primarily a thrash metal band. We like to groove it up a bit but it’s built on a thrash foundation.
PD. Tell us the brief history of yourself.
Degrave started after myself and Clyde started hanging out around 2013. We jammed with a few people for a few years, but no one seemed to fit. Finally we hooked up with the current lineup by March of 2017. We’ve released a live EP and a full-length demo, both of which are now out of print, and now we’re about to release our new self-titled album. That pretty much brings it up to speed.
PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
My number one influence is Dimebag Darrell. He lived like no one else and he played like no one else. Phil Lynott, Zakk Wylde, and Mike Muir are a few more names off the top of my head that also fit into this category. When it comes to non musical influences, I draw a lot from what I read. Stephen King, Poe, Jim Morrison, Hunter S. Thompson shit like that. Mainly the darker side of stuff.
PD. What are your dreams and goals?
To have a piece of our music in every single record collection around the world. And possibly other worlds.
PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?
We all pitch in one way or another when it comes to the writing process. Me, Clyde, and Jordan usually piece the riffs together and Jeff will lay whatever groove over it that he sees fit. We don’t really have one certain topic that we write about, it’s more of a current event timeline. Whether it’s some politicial bullshit going on, or it’s something in our personal lives, or we’re just drunk, we write what we feel at the time.
PD. How do you promote your band and shows?
At the moment, it’s mainly social media outlets like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and so on. It seems to be the easiest, quickest way to reach our fanbase. We talk to a lot of our fans personally through social media as well.
PD. What do you think about downloading music online?
It’s kinda a double edged sword. On one hand you got kids getting into your music that may not have the money to go out and buy the physical album, but on the other hand it’s digging into the artists profits a bit. I’d say I’m on the side of not giving a shit. If you wanna download the shit, that cool. If you wanna snag the record and read along with the lyrics, that’s even cooler.
PD. What’s your outlook on the record industry today?
From where I’m at right now as a 19 year old thrash metal musician, I’d say the outlook is hopeful. I mean, people are always gonna need music in their life, someone’s gotta bring it to em! The industry just has to evolve to stay with the times. I don’t think it’ll ever die.
PD. What song do you wish you’d written and why?
Revolution Is My Name. Every single thing about that song is proof that we need more practice and Pantera is perfect. The riffs, the lyrics, the grooves, and everything in between.
PD. What are some of your pet peeves?
Not trying. I can’t stand people that sit around and wait for something to happen. Go make it happen.
PD. What is your proudest moment in music?
I’d say my proudest moment so far, even though it hasn’t happened yet, would be the release of our new self-titled album. This new record is our best effort to date, and I can’t wait til everyone can hear it. It blows everything else we’ve done out of the water.
PD. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
We’ve got 2 shows coming up in July. July 13th we’re playing at the Blue Note in Columbia, MO and on July 27th we’ve got our record release show at the Mission in Jefferson City, MO. Reasons to go? IT’S TWO HEAVY METAL PARTIES THAT ARE GUARANTEED RAGERS! What other reason do you need?
Band location – Jefferson City, Missouri.
