COLDUN – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

C: I’m great. Believe me. The greatest artist since decades.

But first of all – thanks for the opportunity to speak to you and your audience!

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

C: I play music since the mid 90ies in several bands and projects.

Through the years my own way of making music an express myself through music was developed and so I founded COLDUN.

Started as a solo project back in 2006, I published two albums in 2007 and 2014. Now in 2020 COLDUN is formed as a real band with high-class musicians and long-time companions, who all are experienced through many bands und projects through the last 20 years. In this constitution we will publish the new album “GrandSunRitual” in January 2021.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

C: My musical background was influenced by blues-, rock- and metal bands. Mainly the classic 90ies metal bands as Running Wild, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake or Helloween are my faves out of this epoch. Later the more extreme music came into my live started with Amorphis (The karelian isthmus) or Asphyx (last one on earth). Beside that, many other metal bands escorts my live so far.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

C: Live my live, express myself through music and grow a little bit in this live in the right direction.

And to come up with the new album: of course that as much people as possible hear it and can make their own decision whether they like it or not.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

C: We wrote the songs of the new album by ourself as a band. Only a few songs of the new album are written by myself alone. The songs of the previous two albums are written by myself.

The lyrics of the new album are all about questions of meaning, life and death. All of this now with a radically positive basic tenor based on the conviction that death is not absolute and certainly not an end. In addition, I weave thoughts that I have developed over the last few years on some trips in very informative areas. The basic idea, however, remains a spiritual or, if you will, philosophical optimism, based on the knowledge that nothing is as bad as we like to believe in our sadomasochistic self-mortification.

And although the lyrics are so positive inside, the top level when reading is perhaps to be understood as melancholy, together with the still predominant melancholy mood of the music. This is, if you will, an arc of tension between obvious melancholy and deeper-lying radical optimism.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

C: The promotion of the new album is laid into the hands of Markus Eck with his METALMESSAGE promotion agency. He is a really passionate guy whose heart beats for good music.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

C: It is both a curse and a blessing. On the one hand you can reach a lot of people quite easily, on the other hand a lot of supposed artists do this, which makes it very difficult for the listener to discover really interesting music.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

C: Hard to say. There are none – and a lot at the same time.

Lets say Us and Them by Pink Floyd – it has a fantastic smooth mood.

PD: What are some of your favorite albums?

C: actual TOP 5:

Opeth – In Cauda Venenum

Borknagar – True North

Chris Rea – Road to Hell

Polyphia – Renaissance

Joe Bonamassa – Greatest Hits

Alltime TOP 5:
Running Wild – Death or Glory

Helloween – The Keeper I&II

Asphyx – Last one on Earth

Iron Maiden – Somewhere in Time

Threshold – Hypothetical

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

C: It is every time the moment when you hold a new own album the first time in your hand. In this moment all of the former work, energy, blood and tears of months sometimes years (as in the new album) of making this music is flowing of your body into the aether.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

C: Right now, we fully concentrate on the promotion and publishing of the new album “GrandSunRitual”. It is planned to come out at 15.01.2021!

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

C: Because it will be the first show of COLDUN since the first sign of life in 2007!

But now is not the time to talk about a specific date. We’re a little different on this issue.

Let’s see what happens next.

Thanks Pete!
