CAMENS

JULY 29th

The pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns that stemmed from it affected everyone differently. For bands and musicians, it did one of two things. For some it spelled the end, with many bands fizzling out… For others, they doubled down, using the time to hone their skills and write new music. For Stoke band Camens, pushed to the brink through cancelled gigs and various bouts of isolation, the end was painfully and regrettably nigh. That was, until their fans showed them just how much Camens meant to people, not just at home, but all over the world. Testament to this is the band’s most recent single ‘Poltergeist’. Amassing nearly 30k plays on Spotify, various editorial playlists (Apple, Youtube, Soundcloud, etc) and 100s of different radio station plays across the likes of Amazing Radio and XS Manchester (earning track of the week with the latter).

That very existence of Poltergeist, and all that follows owes a large debt to the support of the band’s ardent fanbase. Indeed, much of the money to record and promote this batch of records came as a result of their ‘Ambassadors of Camens’ Patreon channel. Launched in July 2020 as a response to the Covid pandemic, #AOC was launched to try to keep the band alive. It more than surpassed that. “The support since launching is as big a testament to the number of real fans that love and support us as you can get” the band explain. “We’ve created a real community of Camens fans around the world with members as far away as USA, Mexico and even New Zealand!” Two years on, hours of exclusive content and hundreds of welcome merch packs later, Camens are now in a stronger position than ever before, with a string of new singles lined up for release this year, the next of which ‘Illustrator’ drops on July 29th.

Perhaps Camens at their most summery and idiosyncratic, ‘Illustrator’ channels all the aspirational bombast of ‘00s indie and provides it with a distinctly contemporary twist. A refreshing and intelligent take on a tried and tested format; anthemic indie made for festival stages. “It’s about being attracted to creatives, girls who act, sing, play music, dance etc.” the band go on  “I stumbled across the chorus almost by accident, then the verses took shape over a few weeks in isolation during the first lockdown. I have a big architect drawing table, with a big flip chart pad on it. Whenever I get an idea, it goes on the board. Some songs come together in five minutes; others are an amalgamation of ideas over a longer period. This was one of those”.   Clocking in at under three minutes, ‘Illustrator’ is a track that lends itself perfectly to radio, and promises to lodge itself in your head to the point you’ll be humming it long after it’s finished.
