Calarook – Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PW: Philipp Wyssen: Vocals
NW: Nico Wiget: Guitar
LM: Lukas Mischler: Violin
YL: Yves Locher: Drums
PD: What type of artist are you?
Calarook: Silly but still serious. Silly about the lyrics, serious about the songwriting itself. We are of the sort who want to make music, which we would listen ourselves, with a theme that we like. We love beer and party, but we know that we have to deliver good shows. We know when it is ok to party and when we have to be serious.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
Calarook: The band started in 2014 with Nico and Yves with the name “Calico”. Until 2016, the crew was complete. We played our first show at a birthday party of a friend. A year later, the first demo EP with the name “Calico” was released. We played many shows all over Switzerland and even on the Ragnarök Festival in Germany. After two changes in the lineup, we are now looking forward to release our first full-length album “Surrender Or Die” on September 11th. Next year we have the chance to play at the Hard Rock Hell Spring Break in England.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Calarook: We have many Influences, since every one of us listens to different subgenres of metal and other genres. This way, every one brings other ideas to the songs. It would be almost impossible to list all the bands, which inspired us. For the lyrics we sometimes do researches on the internet, get inspiration from movies or books about pirates. But many of the stories are just out of mind.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
Calarook: Play insane shows all over the world, meet great other bands and party with them and the fans.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
Calarook: The songs are all written together. Normally, everyone writes his part on his own after some jam sessions in the rehearsal room. Only some of the lyrics are from a friend of the band.
The songs have all one thing in common: Pirates. Sometimes the lyrics are serious and epic, and on the other hand, they are totally silly.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
Calarook: Mainly online over social media. There we can reach exactly those people who are interested in our music. Of course, we are always happy when a magazine or webzines is interested in our work and want to make an interview or a review.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
Calarook: We for ourselves prefer to have the music on CD. Because a music album does not only consists of the songs. The artwork and the booklet are also an important part of the whole creation.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
PW: Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s a masterpiece.
NW: Stairway to heaven. Because it is still the best song ever written.
LM: Die Apokalyptischen Reiter – Seemann
YL: The Eagles – Hotel California
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
Calarook: Carrying equipment after the show and stay sober because you have to drive home.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
Calarook: When we had the chance to play at the Ragnarök Festival in Germany. It was an awesome experience for a young band like us.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
Calarook: We are looking forward to the release of the debut album on September 11th. Now we are working on the music videos, which will also be released very soon.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
Calarook: At the moment, only our Demo EP “Calico” is online. It is on YouTube, Bandcamp and a few more platforms. The debut album will be available from the September 11th also on these two and on Spotify, ITunes, Google Play and many more. The CD can be preordered via over our Homepage calarook.ch. We ship worldwide! Two video clips will come before the release. One after the release. So stay tuned.
