Borderline – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

B: Eclectic it’s a good word to define our band.

We draw our inspiration from the different musical cultures met during our tours. Our musical identity is defined by original sonorities mixing a variety of styles in order to make the public travel through different continents and countries.

We also try to take up technical challenges. I mean, when you want to play a guaracha but you don’t have all the typical instruments to play a guaracha it is a big challenge; that’s what we do and we like that.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

B: We are a Swiss band from Lausanne, in the French part of Switzerland.

The band has 4 members – Marie at the violin, Greg at the drums, Ramon at the guitar and Laura the singer – and was born in 2013.

We have already released 4 albums.

The first two were electric albums (WelKome, 2015 and Theatre, 2016) and gave the band the opportunity to play a lot in Switzerland, around twenty gigs.

The third one was an acoustic album (Across the Rainbow, 2017) that gave us the chance of crossing Swiss frontiers and starting a World Tour (London, Madrid, Reykjavik, Prague, Copenhagen, New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Toronto, Beijing, Osaka, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Dubai, St Petersburg….)

Our last album ETNIA, released in 2020, is an electric album and was recorded in part in Nashville at the Blackbird studio during our USA Tour along the road of blues (from New Orleans to Chicago).

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

B: It’s not easy to answer this question. The band is formed by four members with very different personalities and influences, besides that’s why our music is so eclectic. So if we have to give some of our musical influences, we could say : Johnny Cash, James Brown, Gotan Project, Jonathan Davis, Pink Martini, Bob Dylan…

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

B: Our dreams and goals are quite simple: to be on stage, to share our music with the public, all around the world, to make public travel with us and to keep creating new sounds.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

B: Band’s members don’t have a specific role and everybody takes part in the process of creation. Someone brings a sound, another one adds something, a third one suggests some lyrics, then we brainstorm and all together we build a song.

Our songs talk about our lives’ stories, about our emotions, experiences, convictions.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

B: Our label Symphony Booking Agency is in charge of that. The band works especially on the musical creation and the label manage the booking and the marketing part; it’s a great teamwork and they believe in us.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

B: We don’t really have the choice, we have to fit onto the development of the music industry, but we clearly prefer records.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

B: The Beatles’ songs, because they are all amazing, well written, well composed.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

B: When we have to answer to poor questions of some journalists.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

B: Without a doubt : Indianola. In October 2019, they invited us to play at the B.B King’s Club Ebony in Indianola (USA); B.B King’s home ! That was amazing and a great honour for us to play on the same stage where B.B King, Ray Charles, James Brown, Ike Turner, Clarence Carter and many more played. The energy was magical and the public incredible!

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

B: We worked on a new single during this summer called New Orleans, and it has been released on September 11th. You can find an electric and an acoustic version – that will be released on September 19th- of this new single. Now we are working on new singles, on videoclips, on our ETNIA’s vernissage (November 7th, in Moudon, Switzerland) and on our next shows and tours.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

B: You can find our 4 albums on Spotify and Youtube, but also on our website and social networks.
