I was very fortunate to receive a pre release copy of Bitter Lake’s stunning EP ‘Plagues’. Fortunate because this EP is a kick arse statement to what you can achieve with hard work, talent and a positive determination to believe in one’s self.

‘Plagues’ opens with the screaming ‘Deadman’s Switch’ A thunderous attack on the listener. as the energy of this track drives along, each beat is astounding as it strikes you in the heart. ‘Firmly Rooted in the Ground’ follows suit as Bitter Lake again hits you with high energy, atmospheric, black metal at its best. ‘Inhaling Chaos’ asks us to “take a deep breath” and to “inhale the chaos”. Well there is no chaos, just some amazing Avant-Garde rock music that will blow your mind.

Where Bitter Lake truly shine is in respect to the ability to produce music of many layers, there is always something extra that will draw you in. A good example of this is on ‘Nature Kicks Back’ where we are treated to some stunning effects near the end of the track. Title track ‘Plagues’ has Bitter Lake attacking the listener, blaming the listener, condemning the listener and accusing them of being the Plague. In just under 3 minutes this track is a masterpiece. It goes right where you want it to go. The EP ends with the searing Grimbit remix of ‘Inhaling Chaos’ Almost making this track appear even more sinister than the original.

With ‘Plagues’ Bitter Lake prove that all the hard work was worth it. It is a stunning piece of work and highly recommended.
