Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
B: I write very personal songs that come from my real life experiences, in hope that they can inspire the listener. I studied art & design so for me visuals are also a huge aspect of songwriting. When making music I often imagine a whole visual world to go with the song!
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
B: I got my first guitar when I was 14 and from then I have been writing. After learning how to use logic, I built a vocal booth in my wardrobe closet at home so I could record all my songs. From the guitar based demos I created, I got a lot of positive responses online which encouraged me to pursue music as a career. I then met my producer Tai and we worked on loads of songs, which became my debut album, ‘UTOPIA!’.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
B: I grew up listening to a lot of Red hot chilli peppers, Avril Lavigne, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra, Linkin Park, Paramore, Evanescence, Radiohead, Joy Division and Nirvana. As I grew older I specifically related to empowering female artists such as Grimes, Banks, Florence and the machine, P!nk, FKA Twigs, Ellie Goulding, Marina and the Diamonds, Bjork, Kate Bush and Fiona Apple.
I also get super inspired by movies, especially anime. I love Studio Ghibli films, the whole aesthetic is on point and they always have a really positive message. Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro are my favourites.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
B: To carry on making the best music I can, working hard to be the best artist I can be, constantly learning and growing. To tour the world, inspire millions and have a positive impact on people’s lives. One day I would also love to build an animal sanctuary.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
B: I write my own songs, ever since I can remember I have found it to be a very therapeutic process. We have all these complex emotions and it’s so rewarding to be able to turn them into a piece of art. The topics vary depending on how I’m feeling but it’s always a very personal process.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
B: Online ads, social media, music videos…
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
B: It’s ok as long as the artist is getting a good percentage of the profit.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
B: F*ck with myself by BANKS. That song is fire. It has so much strong female energy and it makes me feel so empowered. If I’m feeling down this is one of the best songs to dance around to!
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
B: People who eat with their mouth open, people who sneeze without covering their face and just let the germs fly everywhere. Oh, and of course, trolls…
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
B: Making songs that I’m really proud of and staying true to my vision. Finishing and releasing my first album ‘UTOPIA!’. Knowing that millions of people have watched my videos on youtube, and getting messages from people saying that I have inspired them.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
B: I’ve got a new single and music video coming out soon, which I’m so excited about!
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
B: My debut album UTOPIA! is out now. You can buy CD’s on website, and download my music on all major digital music platforms!
