Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
Auré: Hi! I am Auré, vocalist for the French Death Metal band Akiavel.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
Auré: I started singing when I was the age of 20. First band and first concert as a singer when I was 22. I joined different groups playing different styles of metal. So I was able to work several voices. Akiavel is my latest project.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Auré: First Julien Truchan from Benighted. He is my friend and a source of inspiration for me. To learn to sing while listening to Cannibal Corpse, I was a fan of the singing of Chris Barnes!
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
Auré: My biggest dream is to play all over the world and especially in the United States.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
Auré: I’m the one who writes the lyrics. The first album is all about a book written by a Canadian therapist “5 Wounds of the Soul”, namely betrayal, rejection, abandonment, humiliation and injustice. These wounds are exposed like 5 wounds in the eyes of the executioner, and 5 wounds in the eyes of the victim. There is a lot to say about that, as you can imagine!
As to the second album, Vae Victis, I like to say it’s the containment album. I’ve read and watched a lot of stories about serial killers. Each song recalls a different killer, and songs are hence about fears, vices, childhood… There are also kind of a tribute to the victims of these monsters.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
Auré: We released our first album, V, in February 2020, just before the first lockdown in France and Europe. Our first tour was therefore fully cancelled, and Akiavel did not really get a chance to play live as a band, apart from an appearance in June 2019 at the Hellfest Off festival, and in Montpellier for a charity festival, also in 2019.
Since then, the promotion is mainly in social networks, and with music video we shot. There are already 5 of them, which is not so bad in one year (laugh). We also played 2 songs live at the online Slay at Home festival by Metal Injection, in February 2021. That was a very cool experience, you should definitely check the videos out!
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
Auré: I think there is no way you can stop this new method of consuming music. Consumers and fans are now used to having literally all the music they like in their pocket, and this is undoubtedly very convenient and efficient!
This being said, we all are from the generation of cassettes and CDs, and I still love to listen to music on CD, I like the contact of the object, the booklet, photos and lyrics you can discover while listening to the music. This is a different experience, a different way of listening to your favorite albums. To me, nowadays, both ways are absolutely necessary (laugh)
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
Auré: This is a very good question, I never asked myself… Hmmm… Let’s say that I’m fortunate enough to write and sing everything I want, so I have no frustration in this regard. And as to all the terrific songs which have been and will be written by other bands, I’m just happy for them and enjoy their music (laugh)
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
Auré: I have an old cat, a lizard and two turtles.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
Auré: I’d say when my friend Julien Truchan (Benighted) sang with me one song “I&Me”, on our first album V. It was a great moment and I was really proud to share the vocals with such a great singer. And more recently when my son lent his voice on the track “Comrad”, on our latest album Vae Victis. I was, and still am, a very proud mother!
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
Auré: I’m already thinking about the theme of the third album! (laugh)
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
Auré: Our first EP, Akiavel, as well as our 2 albums, V and Vae Victis, are available online (as from the 23rd of April for Vae Victis), and our 6 music videos are also available on You Tube. You should definitely check them out! St
