White Harbor – Interview

Interview with Nate (guitarist/songwriter) and Chris (vocalist/songwriter) of White Harbor and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

Nate:  We are White Harbor, a modern metal band based in San Diego California.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

Nate:  It began as a passion project after a long hiatus from writing; after I stopped being an active member of Lion I Am. I was talking to Tyler (my old friend and band mate/owner of Black Gate Records) about how much I was enjoying writing again and, how it would be nice to have a vocalist to work with. Tyler posted on a forum looking for try outs and, that’s how Chris found me. The funny thing is, Tyler and I almost forgot about Chris and, didn’t see the email for almost two weeks. I’ll tell you what, I’m so glad we didn’t forget though because Chris’s try out (which was an entirely completed Die Alone) blew me away. It was exactly what I was looking for and the rest is history.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Chris: for me it was a lot of punk rock and metal. My biggest influence is skate punk like descendents, Black Flag and Terror. I’ve recently been getting into a lot of pop like Joji, Nikki and Halsey which I’ve been enjoying a lot of their recent releases lately!

Nate:  It’s interesting because I honestly don’t really listen to heavy music as much as I used to aside from when I’m at the gym (Kublai Khan TX shout out) but, I grew up in the San Diego scene with bands like As I Lay Dying, In Fear and Faith, Lower Definition, Pierce The Veil etc. so it will forever have a place in my heart. I’m more in line with Chris where I will casually listen to the new Demi Lovato record or lately, due to my three year old daughter’s demands, it’s been The Lorax Soundtrack on repeat which is frankly really going to mess up my Spotify most played next year. Haha

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

Chris: We are always on the path to making music we enjoy and the fans will enjoy. We never want people to think we’re doing this for clout or the money, we do this cause we love to. So I guess our dream is to make people love our music and hopefully have fans show up to future shows and festivals for our band.

Nate:  The main motivator for White Harbor, personally, is to have an artistic outlet for the music we create. I’ve been in bands before and it’s always gotten clouded by ambition. It’s freeing to have no real expectations for the project and have it be about the music first and foremost.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

Chris: Nathan mainly writes all of our music instrumentally speaking. I come in with Melodies and lyrics, every now and then I’ll come in with production. I wrote most of these lyrics this past year so mainly what I’ve endeavored over last few years of my life and conflicts I’ve struggled with that I hope people have and will relate to. Our single “Die Alone” is literally about leaving a toxic environment I was contemplating leaving but was stuck in no matter how much I wanted to leave.

Nate:  I write the songs instrumentally and then Chris will come in with the lyrics and vocal melodies. Eliot will also re-write the drum midis on a real kit to make sure it doesn’t sound like a guitarist did them.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

Chris: We mainly use social media (Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok) and create content on our own time. I own a studio called Half Cab Studios where I mainly make content out of in my free time while Nate will help me with his amazing eye for visuals such as promos and videos.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

Chris: I think it’s a great thing for fans and musicians alike. Anything to get music to people in more convenient ways! I especially love the collaborations that have developed because of it.

Nate:  I agree with Chris. It really opened up a world of possibilities for musicians and fans alike. Without the modern streaming environment there are a ton of artists we wouldn’t be exposed to otherwise.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Chris: Like one we like from another artist? I guess that would be something we’d both agree on, we do have a sick cover from one of our favorite bands releasing soon, but we don’t want to give away any surprises!

Nate:  that’s a super interesting question. I don’t think there’s any particular song that I wish I wrote personally that wasn’t already my own. I think I enjoy what others have wrote because I get to see someone else’s perspective whether it’s lyrically or via their unique way of composing a song. If I wrote it, it wouldn’t be as special because I’m no longer seeing into someone else’s mind. Honestly, I wouldn’t even like what we have done with White Harbor as much if it wasn’t for Chris. He provides the heart and soul to the songs that I wouldn’t have been able to do on my own.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

Chris: Repeating myself seems like such a small pet peeve but it makes me feel like you’re talking to a brick wall getting nowhere. I know it’s probably my fault cause I speak pretty softly (ironic I know!) all the time but man I wish people would listen more.

Nate:  same, actually. Haha

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

Chris: Our first release “Let Go” hitting 15k listens and getting over a thousand listeners on Spotify. I’m already happy that anyone would listen to our music but just getting that many people devoted to listening to us was an amazing feeling personally.

Nate:  To be honest, everything Chris and I have done with White Harbor. We’ve clicked since day one on this project and as a result we’ve created some of the best work I’ve done. I’m super excited to show people what we have in store in the future.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

Chris: We’re announcing our first record coming up at the end of this year, and to accompany this there is a music video for the title track “Forever” coming soon as well. The date is TBD but we’re hoping for the end of September time frame so keep a look out.

Nate:  Right now we are preparing some content to go along with the upcoming song releases. Also, now that we wrapped up the first record, I’m currently writing for the next one along with Chris.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

Chris: Right now you can find all four of our singles on YouTube under Blackgate Records (our record company)and, on all streaming platforms ie: Spotify, Apple Music, Google Playstore etc. We plan on releasing a music video soon for a brand new single as well which we will announce once we have a definitive date.
