We The Crooked – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

NV: We’re a rock band in essence. I like to think our music patrols the space between melody and dissonance.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

JC: We formed in Toronto in early 2017 as “The Crooked”. Most of us knew each other through the local Toronto scene, except for Neelesh who we met through Craigslist. We released a couple of EPs that we toured in Canada and in Europe. The pandemic hit us hard, like it did everyone. We had to cancel a second European tour, and do some soul searching as a band. During this time, we made some changes, including altering our name to “We The Crooked”.

PD:. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

RS: Musically; Freddie Mercury, Justin Chancellor and Bon Scott. Non-musically; ice hockey legends like Dominik Hàsek, Patrick Royand Martin Brodeur.

J.C: Musically: The Beatles, Soundgarden, St.Vincent, The Mars Volta. Non-musically: Cornel West, Christopher Noland, Salvador Dali,

NV: Musically: Brad Paisley, Johnny Hiland, Daniel Donato, Slash, John Mayer. Non-musically: Christopher Hitchens, Sophie Scholl, loads more probably.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

J.C.: To be happy and proud to do something that adds meaning to our human experience.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

J.C.; Sometimes the band writes collectively, and sometimes we’ll work on a tune for which I have a specific vision. The songs can be about anything, our personal experiences, dreams, ideas and sometimes even just brainless word play.

NV: Also, social distancing and geographic separation forced us to work on material asynchronously. Like passing a football back and forth. It was surprisingly successful.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

J.C: In this day and age, mostly online. When possible, word of mouth is a massive promotional tool. Nothing beats a real-life, multidimensional conversation to convey to someone what you’re all about.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

RS: Adapt or die, I guess.

J.C: Sure, however people want to digest their music is cool with me.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

RS: The Funky Chicken.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

RS: Being hungry, virtue signaling, and politicizing non-political issues.

J.C.: Drivers who drive too slow in the passing lane.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

RS: Actually touring outside of my own city/country.

J.C. Our first show as a band.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

J.C : One more ‘Crooked Cover’ and one more original track to follow it. After that, we’re recording some new sonic children.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

Bandcamp is a solid place to download our tracks, but we’re streaming our music too.
