Virtue In Vain – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

Hywel: We are a Metalcore band from Cardiff/London. We lean more to the progressive side of metalcore with our latest music. We also really pride ourselves on putting on a live show that you won’t soon forget.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

Hywel: Virtue In Vain started in 2012 but didn’t start playing shows and releasing music until 2014. We have grown over time as people and musicians and we think that really shows in our music. We have played many shows and been on tours a number of times, making great friends along the way.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Hywel: We have had many over the years in our growing taste. The staples for us are Make Them Suffer, The Devil Wears Prada, Architects, Napoleon, For the Fallen Dreams, Crystal Lake & Currents

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

Hywel: I would like to play with The Devil Wears Prada & Make Them Suffer as I think that would really be a goal of mine. I would also like to do an EU & US tours if given the opportunity.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

Hywel: I write the songs lyrically and as a band we write the songs together musically. The topics range from each of our releases, I love concept EP/Albums so I write more of a story with each song being the different chapters.

Our first EP (For All You Know Is The Mask I Wore) is about the loss of identity, and each song goes through a different aspect of that.

Our Second EP (Dusk // Dawn) continues that story of loss of identity and goes over the period of ‘the worst night you could ever experience’ with each song covering a different area.

Our latest single ‘The Whispers Of Sleep, fits into the story but is slightly isolated. The song came about from a nightmare a member of the band had. At one point he wasn’t sure if he was awake or sleeping and even when he woke he wasn’t sure what was real and not. This song is built upon that feeling at that moment. The song also incorporates how our dreams/nightmares are created from our subconscious and how it makes moments from our past, be it places or people, feel so real.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

Hywel: We use all the usual socials (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Tik Tok). The pandemic made it clear that it is so important to be on top of your social media and share what we are doing.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

Hywel: I love it! Anyway you can consume the music you love, I am for. It can be problematic when you bring up how artists get paid, however as a fan it’s great to have the access to listen and find new music.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Hywel: Good question, one that’s come to mind are Assistant To The Regional Manager – The Devil Wears Prada & Old Souls by Make Them Suffer. I love those songs musically & lyrically. They are just beautiful pieces of music.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

Hywel: A pet peeve of mine is being late. I am one of those people who would prefer to be 20 minutes early than 5 minutes late.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

Hywel: It’s hard to say as I feel we have had so many throughout the band’s lifetime. Being asked for an encore was one, playing our first ever tour, playing some venues I never thought I would play (Gloucester Guildhall, The Black Heart-London, The Globe – Cardiff).

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

Hywel: Right now we are working on our next EP and working on a few tours that will be announced later this year. It is really exciting what we have planned for the future for Virtue In Vain and I can’t wait to get it all out.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

Hywel: You can listen to our first two EP’s ( For All You Know Is The Mask I Wore & Dusk // Dawn) now as well as our latest single ‘The Whispers Of Sleep’
