Velvet Starlings – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

VS: Velvet Starlings are a psychedelic garage rock band from Los Angeles.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

VS: Founded by me (Christian) in 2016 velvet starlings started making psychedelic rock across California, then I met brothers foster and Hudson poling after a UK tour at a cage the elephant show. Had to take a break from live music during covid but we have been playing around Southern California and having a ball the last few months.  Playing Beach Life in Redondo Beach and Summerfest in Milwaukee we’re highlights

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

VS: Ooooh. Musical: everything from The Beatles to The Who to Thee Oh Sees to Supergrass. Anything Jack white touches. Anything Damon albarn touches. Nonmusical? We like Mac, Charlie, Dee, Dennis and Frank from its always sunny. We try to capture their chaotic energy onstage every time we play.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

VS: To play music forever and never stop! In front of at least more than 10 people

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

VS: Velvet Starlings. I write about stuff that makes us happy. Stuff that pisses us off. And everything in between.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

VS: We post on Instagram, we debate whether or not we should make TikToks, and then post more on Instagram.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

VS: Well it’s a huge problem because it has destroyed the value of music. But I’m a total hypocrite and use Spotify for everything (I also buy hundreds of albums on vinyl) but the real issue is that the the government didn’t fight Napster, limewire and now Apple Music and Spotify when they came about. Should’ve never been legalized, but there’s not much we can do about it now.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

VS: I am the walrus. I still can’t explain that song even if I tried. I heard it when I was 6 years old and it struck a chord with me. I wanted to know every lyric, but I didn’t understand what any of it meant, little did I know at the time neither did adults haha.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

VS: When people say they like Paul McCartney more than John Lennon.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

VS: We just played at Beachlife 2022! Everyday we woke up and saw our name on the poster next time smashing pumpkins and weezer, we all just freaked out as part of our daily routine.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

VS: Gonna be releasing our 2nd album Pacific Standard Time after 3 years of having it! We’re so stoked on it and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

VS: Technicolor Shakedown our debut album is available at Kitten Robot Records website on pink, blue, and purple vinyl! It’s pretty cool looking
