Varices – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

  • We are four young Swedish men combining the best of old school metal with the best of modern metal, drinking a little bit of alcohol and not minding our attitude as much as we should!

D: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

  • The band formed in a bar in our hometown of Norrköping in 2017, after a probably not so healthy number of beers. We released our debut EP in November 2018, and from there we went on to write new music and perform our first live shows. Things went really good for a while, and in 2019 we performed more than 15 live shows and released our second EP Pitch Black Art.

Then, we all know what happened at the beginning of 2020…

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

  • Our musical influences range from psychedelic 60’s rock to modern extreme metal. Bands like Dead Kennedys, Iron Maiden, Death and Thy Art is Murder have all been playing in the back of our heads while writing our own music. Our greatest non-musical influence, however, would probably be Tom Selleck’s moustache.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

  • Our dream as a band is simply to keep on have people enjoying our music – both live and in their headphones! Our goals are numerous, but one is definitely to be a name that people recognize when they hear it.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

  • Our vocalist Calle writes most of the lyrics and the rest of us writes all the parts for our instruments. We usually write all of it together during rehearsals though, so you could simply say that we write everything together.

The lyrical themes vary quite a bit, but they mainly revolve around the darker parts of humanity and the human mind – schizophrenia, revenge and betrayal to name a few examples. In general, we begin with the instrumental parts and let the mood of them inspire the lyrics.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

  • We promote Varices through social media and by doing our absolute best to perform memorable live shows. Our record label also does some promotion on their sites after a new release. Our shows are mainly promoted by creating a Facebook-event and regularly posting about it on our social media.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

  • We think that while it’s yourself listening it’s a very comfortable way, but it sucks economically when you’re the one making the music. The poor payment makes it almost impossible for lesser-known bands to make any money from digital streams, but at the same time it’s a great way to get your name circulated. So, we’re really divided on that one actually.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

  • Probably Jump by Van Halen, because then we could afford some unnecessarily expensive gear and a tour bus that looks way too good for the shows we’re playing. We should also mention that our bassist Anden really wishes that he had written Welcome to the Jungle by Guns n Roses, since he’s somewhat of a fanboy of that song.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

  • People who talk on speakerphone in public, thin moustaches, and Slayer’s guitar solos. We can also mention that our vocalist has an irrational fear of sound checks…

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

  • Every time we play a live show and the band & audience are both happy with the performance.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

  • We are currently marketing our upcoming release (October 29) and booking shows. And as always, we’re in the midst of writing new material as well.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

  • All our released music is available online on platforms like Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and so on. Our upcoming release is the first one to be sold in physical format, and you can get your hands on one at live shows or through our home page/Bandcamp page. And we truly suggest that you do!
